You will be part of the Hawthorne Gardening Company (HGC) Lighting and Environmental Controller R&D team that creates and executes world-class Horticulture Lighting systems in terms of feature, function and durability. As a manager in the Lighting Product Development team, you will be accountable for the robustness of your team’s design & engineering output for HGC Lighting Product Development. Collaborating with your peers globally & with HGC OEM partners overseas, to allow for efficient utilization of global resources. You will utilize your expertise and leadership experience to develop and deliver lighting systems rather than just components. You will report to the R&D Director of Lighting and Environmental Controller. As a trusted Manager in R&D, you will role model the Hawthorne values and create a high-performance culture. Key Work Performed Lead a team of engineers (a player-coach) to plan and manage the development of new HGC Horticulture Lighting products, from concept to final production. Assess the validity and rigor of new product concepts, establish scalable frameworks for ongoing evaluation as appropriate and ensure engineering designs follow sound engineering practice to meet performance, reliability, cost and quality goals. Drive cross-functional teams between R&D, category, marketing, quality and manufacturing to design and develop new lighting products Follow and refine the company product development process, conduct design reviews and interface with other engineers and departments to ensure an efficient transfer from design to production Implement the processes, material selections and engineering designs to achieve world class durability, reliability and fit & Finish of horticulture lighting products Works closely with lighting oversea OEMs’ Engineering Department in development and testing of product development needs. Aides in technical support with supplier interface of design inputs to meet needs of new or existing product development and ensure timely progress during the development process.. Responsible for technical documentation & quality coordination and support including DFMEAs and design validation reviews Managing capability and resources in the team to meet project schedules and ensure that all the technical issues are well matched to the capability & development needs of the individuals within the team Serve as technology expert and stay abreast of industry developments in the field Contribute to company long term product strategy and patent portfolio development. Hold your own in technical discussion, be a subject matter expert, and have strategic influence Hire and manage highly skilled researchers and engineers, providing mentorship, guidance and career development to members of the team Travel up to 25% of the time Minimum Requirements Masters degree or PhD in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or related field Minimum 10 years’ experience in new product development 3 years of direct people management experience in leading and developing teams Proven experience in leading and scaling teams in a sustainable manner Proven track record of innovation Preferred knowledge on lighting product development but not necessary Knowledge on system engineering, design for manufacturing and various quality matrix related with engineering product’s’ lifetime of operation Preferred Knowledge on UL, CSA, EC, and ETL certification processes & details related with electrical safety of lighting product Able to communicate complex technical issues in an appropriate, concise and accurate fashion, both in writing and verbally. Able to communicate at all levels in the company from indirect report to board level with confidence, accuracy and appropriate detail. Possessing a growth mindset, with a genuine interest in new technology and people with various backgrounds and cultures. A clear logical thinker with exceptional attention to technical detail, product quality or lifetime of operation. Persistent approach to problem solving and an inquisitive nature.
