General Produce Distribution Company has a tremendous opportunity to create a culture of safety throughout the organization! We are looking to add to our industry leading company an up and coming, dynamic and engaging safety professional! You will be reporting to and partnering with the Director of Human Resources & Safety to develop safety initiatives, manage worker’s compensation and train employees on safe work practices. This role will require significant self-motivation and a passion for workplace safety. Primary Purpose:The Safety Manager plans, implements and monitors our safety programs to uphold the company’s safety culture. This position ensures compliance with regulatory entities and company’s safety standards. The Safety Manager will implement policies and practices to ensure a safe and healthy work environment.

Essential Functions:

  • Ensures company’s compliance with all federal state and local laws, regulations and administrative practices affecting the company’s safety procedures, such as Cal/OSHA and others.
  • Develops and executes regular auditing of safe work practices across the organization, including but not limited to warehouse operations, transportation and customer locations. Conducts safety inspections and audits to assess employee compliance with safety regulations.
  • Conducts and reports on root cause investigations of workplace incidents, accidents and reasonable suspicion instances reported by employees and visitors. Drafts inspection reports to document inspection findings.
  • Prepares and schedules training to cover emergency procedures, workplace safety, and other relevant topics. Reviews safety training and recommends revisions, improvements, and updates.
  • Identifies opportunities to minimize workplace injuries, accidents, and health problems. Monitors compliance with safety procedures.
  • Ensures that material safety data sheets are maintained and readily accessible when needed.
  • Manages the company’s PPE requirements including hi-visibility vests, shoes and other items.
  • Updates the Illness and Injury Prevention Program manual as needed.
  • Conducts quarterly premise inspections according to Cal-OSHA requirements, coordinates repairs to facilities as needed with other staff and documents in writing. Maintains the OSHA safety log and other administrative requirements related to safety operations and regulations. Ensures completion of required OSHA recordkeeping and reporting.
  • Maintains records of discharge of or employee exposure to hazardous waste and/or pollutants, as required.
  • Coordinates the Safety Program components:
    • Ensures that new employees’ Work Hardening/Conditioning component is followed by shift supervisors and team leaders.
    • Pairs up new employees with mentors the first day of their shift.
    • Ensures that 30, 60- and 75-day safety habits assessments are conducted by shift supervisors for new employees.
    • Checks to see that stretching and warm up exercises are being conducted in every shift and, if needed, leads the crews in performing such exercises.

12. Monitors company premises for compliance with security and safety procedures by using cameras, planned and unplanned visits to departments and shifts.

13. Monitors employees’ safe practices through regular observations during shifts in various departments.

14. Serves as back up staff for the injured employee program (Workers Compensation).

15. Presents Safety portion at all orientation and/or onboarding sessions.

16. Executes follow-up plan for employees experiencing repeated injuries (videos, one-on-one training, conditioning).

17. Executes return-to-work plan for employees who have been out on workers compensation leave for an extended period of time (videos, one-on-one training, conditioning).

18. Plans and coordinates company evacuation drills twice a year.

19. Tracks, trains and certifies employees as forklift and pallet jack operators.

20. Ensures that all first aid kits are properly stocked and orders replacements as required.

21. Other duties as assigned.

Additional Functions:

  • Learns and utilizes all office policies and procedures.
  • Complies with all safety and security regulations and procedures.
  • Other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage conflicting priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to perform the primary functions of this position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Language Skills:

  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of employees, supervisors and vendors
  • Spanish language skills an added plus

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Maintains a valid California Driver License.

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Safety, Occupational Safety and Health, or related field required; Master’s degree desirable. Three years of related experience preferred; A combination of education and/or experience may be considered.
