Forest Hills of DC is Hiring a Nurse Manager Near Washington, DC

Purpose: The primary purpose of your job is to provide oversight and management of nursing care to the residents in the healthcare centers and to supervise the day-to-day nursing activities performed by the nurses and certified nursing assistants. Such management and supervision must be in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations that govern this facility; to ensure that the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times.

Delegation of Authority

As Nurse Manager you are delegated the administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability necessary for carrying out your assigned duties.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Administrative

  • Ensures that all nursing personnel assigned to you comply with the written policies and established for this facility.
  • Reviews periodically the department's facility policies, procedure manuals, job descriptions, etc., and makes recommendations for revisions if needed.
  • Meets with assigned nursing staff, in planning the shifts' services, programs, and activities.
  • Ensures that the Nursing Service Procedures Manual is current and reflects the day-to-day nursing procedures performed in this facility.
  • Ensures that all nursing staff is in compliance with their respective job descriptions.
  • Participates in the development, maintenance, and implementation of the facility's quality assurance program for the nursing service department.
  • Participates in facility surveys made by authorized government agencies.
  • Participates in resident's written discharge plans and the updating of discharge plans.
  • Admits, transfers, and discharges residents as required.
  • Completes accident/incident reports, as necessary.
  • Maintains the Daily Census Report.
  • Performs administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies , charting, etc., as necessary.
  • Holds monthly staff meetings with all shifts and maintain records of these meetings.
  • Maintains an updated census and condition report for each nursing unit.
  • Submits a monthly quality indicator report to the Director of Health Services and the Assistant Administrator.

2. Charting and Documentation

  • Completes and files required record-keeping forms/charts upon the resident's admission, transfers/ and /or discharge.
  • Directs attending physicians in reviewing treatment plans, recording, and signing orders, progress notes, etc., in accordance with established policies.
  • Receives telephone orders from physicians and record on the physicians' order form.
  • Oversees accurate transcription of physician’s orders to resident charts, cardex, medication cards, treatment/care plans, as required.
  • Reviews clinical documentation to ensure it is accurate and complete. Documents in the medical record.
  • Records new /changed diet orders. Forwards information to Dietary Department.
  • Resolves discrepancies concerning physicians’ orders, diet change, charting errors, etc.
  • Ensures that appropriate documentation concerning unauthorized discharges is entered in the resident's medical record in accordance with established policies.
  • Checks all entries made in the resident's medical record for correct dates and times.
  • Facilitates completion of advance directives.

3. Drug Administration

  • Supervision of Charge Nurses giving medication
  • Cleans or delegates cleaning of medication carts monthly and pm; has cleaning schedule initialed by charge nurse.
  • Checks narcotic count three times weekly for accuracy.
  • Performs routine audits on all shifts for nurses giving medications.
  • Disposes of drugs and narcotics as required.
  • Administers medications when necessary, following all procedures of the Home.

4. Personnel Functions

  • Evaluates and signs the employee performance evaluations.
  • Manages staffing needs if assigned personnel fail to report to work.
  • Develops work assignments.
  • Provides leadership to nursing personnel on a twenty-four-hour basis.
  • Makes daily rounds of unit to ensure that personnel are performing assignments.
  • Makes compliance rounds three times weekly, correcting all deficiencies. Gives completed reports to Director of Health Care Services.
  • Ensures that employees, residents, and visitors follow established policies.
  • Reviews complaints and grievances made and follows up on such complaints.
  • Discusses disciplinary action with the Asst. Administrator, the Director or Health Care Services and ensures that disciplinary action is administered fairly and in a timely manner.
  • Reports exposures to blood, body flu ids, infectious materials, and hazardous chemicals in accordance with the facilities policies and procedures.

5. Nursing Care

  • Informs nursing personnel of new admissions, their expected time of arrival, room assignments, etc.
  • Ensures rooms are ready for new admissions and greet residents on arrival.
  • Participates in the orientation of resident and family members to the facility.
  • Makes rounds with physicians and arranges for needed tests.
  • Consults with physician on resident's care, treatment, and rehabilitation.
  • Implements and maintains established nursing objectives and standards.
  • Notifies the physician when the resident is involved in an accident or incident.
  • Carries out restorative and rehabilitative programs, to include self -help and care.
  • Reviews the twenty-four-hour report and follows up on patient care concerns.
  • Reviews all equipment daily, including code carts and suction machines, nebulizers, concentrators etc.
  • Obtains sputum, urine and other specimens for lab tests as ordered.
  • Takes and records TPRs, blood pressures, etc., as necessary.
  • Monitors seriously ill residents, as necessary.
  • Ensures that residents who are unable to call for assistance are checked frequently.
  • Assists in arranging transportation for discharged residents or residents needing escorts.
  • Informs resident's family of the death of a resident.
  • Calls funeral homes when requested by the family. Ensures that post-mortem procedures are followed.
  • Checks weight sheets, skin sheets. Coumadin flow sheets, AOL and restorative flow sheets and CNA AOL sheets for completeness.
  • Monitors care while it is being given to check for respect and dignity, as well as proper procedure. Monitors showers for compliance.
  • Reviews medication administration records daily and ensures that all signatures are present.
  • Audits admission records for completeness.
  • Monitors laboratory testing to ensure that all tests are received and followed up in a timely manner.

6. Staff Development

  • Participates in developing, planning, conducting, and scheduling in-service training classes.
  • Assists with orientation of new staff to their shift and his / her job position and duties.
  • Assists in standardizing the methods in which work will be accomplished.
  • Attends and participates in outside training programs.
  • Attends and participates in advance directive in-service training programs for staff and families.
  • Attends and participates in continuing education programs.
  • Maintains current license status.

7. Safety/Sanitation

  • Monitor staff to ensure that established procedures for safety regulations are followed.
  • Ensures that staff attends all required in-services.
  • Ensures that all work and resident areas are maintained in a clean and sanitary manner.
  • Ensures that all tasks that involve potential exposure to blood/body fluids are identified.
  • Ensures that protective equipment is readily available and on hand.
  • Participates in the Infection Control Program.
  • Ensures that established hand-washing techniques is followed during care procedures.
  • Ensures that all staff participates in all fire safety, and disaster preparedness drills.

8. MDS/Care Plans

  • Reviews care plans to ensure that appropriate care is being rendered and informs RNAC of the changes that need to be made.
  • Ensures that nurses ' notes reflect that the care plan is being followed.
  • Ensures that Certified Nursing Assistants are aware of and refer to the resident care plans.
  • Completes MOS information for all residents in conjunction with the MOS Coordinator.
  • Pain, Fall Risk, Safety, Skin and AIMS Assessments q 3 months and pm to coordinate with MOS.

9. Residents Rights

  • Maintains resident's confidentiality.
  • Ensures nursing care is done in privacy.
  • Reviews complaints and grievances made by residents and follows up with a written report when necessary.
  • Ensures that all nursing staff is knowledgeable of the residents ' rights including the right to refuse medicine.
  • Reports and investigates all allegations of resident abuse and/or misappropriation of resident’s property.

  • Works throughout the nursing service area.
  • Moves intermittently during working hours.
  • Is involved with residents, personnel, visitors, agencies, etc., under all conditions.
  • Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members and visitors.
  • Works beyond normal working hours, and in other positions when necessary.
  • Is subject to call-back during emergency conditions (e.g. weather, evacuation, disasters)
  • Participates in nursing dept on-call schedule.

12. Experience / Requirements

  • Possess a current, unencumbered, active license to practice in the District of Columbia.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures.
  • Must possess leadership, supervisory abilities, and be able to organize, plan, develop, implement, and interpret policies and procedure.
  • Must have patience, tact, and a cheerful d is position, as well as being able to handle difficult residents.
  • Must be able to relate information concerning residents' condition.
  • Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace and meet the general health requirements.
  • Must be able to function independently.
  • Must be able to push, pull, move , and/or lift a minimum of fifty (50) pounds.
