The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) isthe state of Florida’s social services agency. The agency oversees services for child safety, fostering, adoption, domestic violence, adult protective services, refugees, homelessness, mental health, substance abuse, childcare providers, human trafficking and public assistance. The agency’s mission is to work in partnership with local communities to protect the vulnerable, promote strong and economically self-sufficient families, and advance personal and family recovery and resiliency.

Within DCF, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Program office is recognized as the single state authority for substance abuse and mental health services. The Office of SAMH is statutorily responsible for the planning, evaluation, and implementation of a comprehensive statewide system of care for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of children and adults with serious mental illnesses or substance use disorders.

THIS IS NOT A TELEWORK POSITION. CANDIDATE WILL BE REQUIRED TO WORK IN THE TALLAHASSEE OFFICE.

This is a highly responsible and professional position that will serve as the Suicide Prevention Specialist within Policy and Programs. This position will collaborate with each section within the program office and be required to use independent judgement, take initiative in carrying out duties and responsibilities and should be extraordinarily detail oriented.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Updates, revises, and monitors activities of the State Suicide Prevention Strategic Plan, under the direction of the Suicide Prevention Coordinator and the SAMH Services Unit Supervisor.
  • Coordinates with the Suicide Prevention Coordinating Council and other stakeholders.
  • Conducts various research regarding suicide prevention including evidence best practices and models, activities in other states, grants, and other funding opportunities.
  • Gathers information provided by partner agencies, community stakeholders, the Suicide Prevention Coordinating Council about suicide prevention activities and the outcomes of established goals in the strategic plan to draft the Annual Plan under the direction of the Suicide Prevention Coordinator and the SAMH Services Unit Supervisor.
  • Provides technical support and data analysis related to suicide prevention.
  • Maintains and updates the Suicide Prevention website including regular maintenance of relevant statistical and data reporting.
  • Participates in planning activities and disseminates information to promote suicide prevention awareness, including developing and distributing public messaging and sharing resource information with Coordinating Council members, stakeholders, other state agencies, and divisions of the Department, such as the Office of Child Welfare.
  • Provides staff support to the Suicide Prevention Planning Council and other task forces or meetings as assigned.

  • Ability to work independently, exercise creativity, be attentive to detail, and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Ability to manage multiple and simultaneous responsibilities and to prioritize scheduling of work.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of all medical, financial, and legal information.
  • Ability to complete work assignments accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and four years of experience in prevention or the behavioral health field is preferred.
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university can substitute for one year of the required experience.
  • Professional experience as described above can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the preferred college education.
  • Two years of experience conducting research and data analysis.
  • Two years of experience preparing agendas, scheduling, and facilitating public meetings.
