Under general supervision, reporting to the Director of Technology, the Systems Engineer is responsible for bare metal and virtualized computer systems. With input from researchers and instructors, designs systems and provides infrastructure provisioning, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Maintains competency in modern on-prem and cloud service designs, making solution recommendations to achieve optimal price/performance/scalability outcomes. Collaborates with DePaul Information Services network and infrastucture staff to build on top of VMWare, Azure, bare metal hardware, or other best fit providers. This position is primarily remote, working on campus as needed.
What You'll Do:
- Design, deploy and manage effective compute services on bare metal, virtualization, and cloud compute services in consultation with the Director of Technology, school directors, and faculty.
- Implement operational excellence in service delivery of compute resources to faculty and students, emphasizing automation and self-service enablement.
- Perform server configuration, hardware/software tuning Linux systems, develop and implement recommendations and solutions for upgrades and improvements to ensure a stable, available, and secure environment.
- Monitor and evaluate developments in PaaS and IaaS solutions, making recommendations as to the most efficient method of service delivery.
- Coordinate, perform, and manage system patching, upgrade, and maintenance tasks
- Project management and documentation. Assist in long range planning and lifecycle management of hardware and operating systems.
What You'll Need:
- Bachelor’s Degree (B.S.) in Computer Science or related field required.
- Minimum of 3 years related experience and/or training in systems engineering/administration
- Experience with GPU/CUDA based designs & system administration
- Extensive experience and knowledge of virtualization and containerization models, for example, OpenStack, Kubernetes
- Extensive knowledge and experience with Linux/Unix
- Demonstrable of modern provisioning/configuration management tools e.g. Chef, Ansible
- Experience in storage technologies and system monitoring/backup tools.
- Certification in one or more IaaS platforms (e.g. Azure, AWS, etc.) preferred Certification in additional OS, provisioning, configuration and/or automation systems preferred
