Dart is Hiring a Facilities Maintenance Technician Near Des Moines, IA

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Building Supervisor, this position will perform semi-skilled repair work in the upkeep of physical premises, buildings, facilities, and grounds.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Perform preventive maintenance in the form of troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing DART buildings, facilities, fixtures, equipment, and property involving HVAC, carpentry, painting, masonry, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical
  • Analyze and diagnose equipment problems while identifying safety hazards
  • Maintain plants, trees, ground covers and other landscaping materials and irrigations systems to include planting, watering, feeding and maintain flower beds, shrub beds, mulch/rock beds and trees
  • Installs new/replacement equipment and materials in all facilities by performing electrical, plumbing, carpentry, welding, masonry, glazing, boiler, hydraulic, pneumatic, irrigation, heating, refrigeration, ventilating, air conditioning and other maintenance work
  • Perform snow removal activities to include plowing, sanding operations and handwork
  • Safely operate any non-revenue company vehicle and/or heavy equipment including 4-wheeler, bobcat, tractors, lawn mowers, chippers/shredders, and paint sprayer
  • Safely operate electrical and air powered tools, pipe fitting, welding, hydraulic, pneumatic, and other mechanical tools, snow removal and salt spreader equipment and/or other heavy equipment assigned to the department
  • Trouble shoots, diagnoses, and repairs malfunctions in boilers, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, heating, refrigeration, ventilating and air conditioning, irrigation and other systems, structures, and equipment

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience in skilled maintenance or construction work
  • Class C Iowa Driver's License and satisfactory driving record

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing, industrial waste, air conditioning, heating, irrigation systems, boilers, pneumatic, equipment, pumps, hydraulic equipment, pipe fitting, and welding
  • Standard procedures, tools, equipment, and materials used for grounds maintenance and repair
  • Basic chemicals, interactions, danger signs, and safe disposal methods
  • Techniques of planting, transplanting, cultivation, pruning, and maintaining lawns, ground cover, shrubs, hedges, and trees

SKILLS AND/OR ABILITY TO:

  • Read and understand appropriate level of technical manuals, schematics, blueprints, and technical trade code books pertaining to facilities and equipment serviced
  • Work independently for long periods of time
  • Understand and effectively follow both oral and written instructions
  • Effectively perform skilled landscaping and semi-skilled facility maintenance and repair tasks on DART property and facilities
  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with those contracted in the performance of required duties

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

On a normal workday, this position requires:

  • Prolonged periods of standing, walking, reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, and physical activity
  • Extensive use of hands, fingers, legs, and arms in operations requiring constant motion
  • Clarity of vision sufficient to see objects clearly at distances of 20 inches or less
  • Ability to hear normal verbal conversations
  • Ability to seize and hold objects with hands or use fingers to carry out designated tasks
  • Ability to reach/extend hand in arms in any direction (horizontal and vertical movement)

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work is performed both inside and outside in various weather conditions. This position is regularly exposed to disagreeable elements such as heat, cold, dampness, fumes, noise, etc. May occasionally work in confined spaces.

POSITION SUMMARY:

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (OTHER DUTIES MAY BE ASSIGNED AS NEEDED):

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • High School diploma or GED
  • A minimum of two years experience in skilled maintenance or construction work

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Knowledge and experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing, industrial waste, air conditioning, heating, irrigation systems, boilers, pneumatic, equipment, pumps, hydraulic equipment, pipe fitting and welding
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and ability to follow safe working practices
  • Knowledge of standard procedures, tools, equipment and materials used for grounds maintenance and repair
  • Knowledge of basic chemicals, interactions, danger signs and safe disposal methods
  • Knowledge of methods, techniques of planting, transplanting, cultivation, pruning and maintaining lawns, ground cover, shrubs, hedges and trees
  • Knowledge of or ability to acquire the knowledge of, EPA, DOT and other related safety rules and regulations

Skills or Ability to:

  • Ability to understand and effectively follow both oral and written instructions
  • Ability to work independently for long periods of time
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties
  • Ability to effectively perform skilled landscaping and semi-skilled facility maintenance and repair tasks on Agency property and facilities
  • Skill in the use of the tools and performance of the tasks of the various trades utilized to repair the systems
  • Ability to read and understand appropriate level technical manuals, schematics, blueprints and technical trade code books pertaining to facilities and equipment serviced

Special Requirements:

  • Valid Iowa CDL with Air Brake and Passenger endorsements with satisfactory driving record
  • No attendance problems within the last two years
  • No disciplinary issues within the last 12 months

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

On a normal work day, this position requires:
