Cumming Group is Hiring a Sustainability Project Manager Near San Francisco, CA

Overview

Join our dynamic and rapidly expanding Energy & Sustainability team. We provide a solutions-oriented suite of services that specifically address our clients’ unique challenges, thus enabling them to achieve extraordinary results. Our firm is currently looking for a Sustainability Project Manager with specific expertise in solid waste and implementing zero waste programs. This role will provide zero waste project management and technical expertise for the Energy and Sustainability Division across a range of sectors, including aviation, education, public agencies, cities, and private entities. This individual will operate out of either our San Francisco or Oakland office.

As a key subject matter expert, this position that includes direct performance of technical services including but not limited to: zero waste strategy development and planning, waste characterization assessments and data analysis, identification of waste prevention and diversion strategies (sustainable procurement, circular economy, recycling, advanced processing strategies, etc.), program implementation support, strategic communications, education and behavior change, and other associated technical services.

This role will also be responsible for serving in a project management role overseeing delivery of these services and coordinating a project team comprised of both internal staff and subconsultants. A successful candidate will be well versed is zero waste strategies, local policies and regulations, contribute broad experience in the sustainability field, and have strong project management skills.

Responsibilities

The following list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as deemed necessary by management:

  • Perform technical tasks for delivery of sustainability and zero waste technical services:
    • Perform waste audits/characterization studies, analyze waste composition data, and identify potential waste prevention and diversion strategies.
    • Provide guidance on sustainability and solid waste regulations, industry best practices, and emerging technologies, particularly in California.
    • Identify and evaluate compliance on relevant solid waste policies and regulations, including organics recycling.
    • Develop zero waste solutions for reducing landfill disposal and reducing operational emissions/costs: diversion/recycling/processing/conversion options, extended producer responsibility, circular economy, zero waste procurement, compostable materials, etc.
    • Develop and implement zero waste support programs, such as training materials.
    • Perform solid waste generation/diversion calculations using a volume to weight methodology where actual data is not available.
    • Familiarity with the EPA WARM tool and ability to calculate greenhouse gas emissions associated with waste generation, prevention, diversion, etc.
    • Oversee TRUE Zero Waste certification (desirable, not required)
  • Serve as day-to-day contact for clients and facilitate routine check in meetings, data collection, and work delivery.
  • Use effective writing and verbal skills to deliver high-quality reports and presentations.
  • Perform quality control reviews of project deliverables.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders while delivering excellent customer service in a highly dynamic growth environment.
  • Collaborate with and/or provide direct technical or project management support for the delivery of other sustainability services where needed, including sustainability strategic planning, climate action planning, decarbonization, sustainability certifications, and sustainability training programs.
  • Participate in project pursuits including client relationship development and premarketing, preparation of proposals, interview content, scopes of work, and project budgets.
  • Anticipate potential schedule or priority delays and initiate plans for alternative actions.
  • General knowledge of sustainability and climate change frameworks and international standards.

Qualifications

  • 5 years' of sustainability and solid waste industry experience and related project management.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Sustainability Environmental Planning, Environmental Sciences, or related field from an accredited four-year college or university.
  • Relevant solid waste or sustainability credentials (preferred): TRUE Zero Waste Advisor, etc.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, as well as business presentation skills.
  • Flexibility and ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and collaborate with various team members/partners in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must have demonstrated familiarity with State and local solid waste regulations and recent climate regulations.
  • Experience with large campus/portfolio clients such as municipalities, government agencies, higher education. Prior experience or familiarity with aviation sector is highly desirable.
  • Must have access to transportation for client site visits and ability to travel as needed.
  • Consultant experience is desired but not required.
