The City of Birmingham (EOE) is hiring an Event Assistant to assist with the Farmers Market and other events for the Birmingham Shopping District. This seasonal position involves customer service, event setup, and assisting with the Farmers Market on Sundays (May to October). The role requires interacting with vendors and the public. Attendance is expected on Sundays from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, starting May 5, 2024, and ending October 27, 2024. Additional work at scheduled events may be required. FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This list is not to be treated as all inclusive.
1. Assisting with set-up and tear down of Farmers Market each Sunday morning at 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and other events as scheduled.
2. Examples of duties:
•Setting up canopies and canopy weights, chairs and tables/picnic tables.
•Distributing trash boxes throughout the market. General cleanup including picking up trash and disposing of trash bags.
•Utility set up such as water connection or electrical hookup.
•Assisting vendors and patrons when needed, including set-up or carrying large orders to patron's vehicles.
•Storing and locking up equipment after event.
•Placing directional signs at major intersections.
•Gathering data at events by tracking attendance, and soliciting and collecting survey responses.
•Manning the Information Tent, answering questions and assisting vendors and patrons.
•Serve as a team lead for volunteers.
NECESSARY SKILLS:
•Must be able to communicate effectively
•Must be able to provide great customer service
•Must be reliable and prompt
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
•Experience in a customer service related field.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
•Must be able to lift up to 40lbs with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 20 lbs.
•Must be able to frequently stand, walk, bend, twist, reach kneel, squat.
•Must be able to work outdoors in varying degrees of seasonal weather.
•Must be able to distinguish people or objects at varied distances under a variety of light conditions.
•Must be able to withstand noise changes in the public and outdoor environment.
•Must be able to transport between offsite locations.
