Salary: $1,700 - $2,078 semi-monthly

Job Location: This position is with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Division of Environmental Quality, and will be located at 1730 East Elm Street, Jefferson City, MO 65101

You’ll be joining the Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ Waste Management Program’s Engineering Section, where science and policy meet to ensure that solid and hazardous waste management is protective of human health and the environment. You’ll work with a diverse group of team members and stakeholders to make sure the businesses and entities that treat, store, or dispose of solid and hazardous waste in Missouri, are performing these tasks in a manner that is safe for all Missouri residents and visitors.

What you’ll do:

• Develop and maintain a working knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations, technical principles and/or practices applicable to assigned projects and area of expertise, including sampling and analysis of environmental media, groundwater monitoring programs at solid and hazardous waste management facilities, and fate and transport of contaminants in the environment.
• Review solid and hazardous waste facilities’ groundwater monitoring data and reports to ensure protection of human health and the environment and evaluate the effectiveness of groundwater remediation systems.
• Serve as Quality Assurance Coordinator with the Environmental Services Program (ESP) for sampling activities at hazardous waste management facilities. This includes developing and managing the annual Quality Assurance Project Plans with ESP, evaluating the split sampling analysis and forwarding the report of results and tracking progress with the annual work plans.
• Resolve technical and regulatory issues with applicants, consultants and/or stakeholders utilizing telephone conversations, email, face-to-face meetings, and written correspondence.
• Participate in public involvement activities associated with projects.
• Conduct site visits and inspections to ensure the facility is in compliance with approved plans. Attend on-site meetings to discuss any related issues.
• Coordinate all projects, activities and tasks, as necessary and appropriate, with internal and external stakeholders including executive team members, regulated facilities, facility consultants, other Program Units/Sections, other Department Programs/Divisions, the public, local, state, and federal agencies, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
• Develop and maintain technical expertise in the area of hazardous waste treatment technologies, solid waste management and all applicable regulations and focus areas through review and acquisition of appropriate technical standards, literature review, and attendance of specialized trainings, conferences, and seminars.

All you need for success:

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and 0-4 years of relevant experience. (Substitutions may be allowed.)
• The ability to operate a motor vehicle and maintain a valid vehicle operator’s license.
• Preferred degree program would include the following: Environmental Science or Technology, Chemistry, Biology, Physical Science, Geology, Natural Resource Management, Soil Conservation, or a closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications

• Work 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. schedule, with occasional overtime required.
• Statewide travel for periods up to one week may be required, usually averaging two to three days per month. This may also require overnight stay.
• Ability to carry 15 pounds of equipment through industrial-type facilities and the ability to walk over rough ground.
• Ability to review and evaluate groundwater data, work plans, and reports for desired outcomes.
• Knowledge or the ability to learn the principles and practices of groundwater monitoring and geology basics.
• Good technical and oral/written communication skills.
• Use of Mirocsoft Office and general knowledge of office equipment.
