 Position Summary

In collaboration with the Nurse Manager, the Assistant Nurse Manager:

  • Assures the delivery of quality department /clinical services in accordance with established hospital and regulatory/accreditation agency standards.
  • Promotes a positive and professional image and is a role model, coach, mentor, problem solver and resource for staff and peers.
  • Responsible and accountable for the overall operations of their assigned department. This includes and is not limited to: development of department goals and objectives that are consistent with the hospital mission and strategic plan, the management of personnel, preparing/monitoring of and accountability for the department budgets.
  • Responsible for management of FTE component of staffing budgets
  • Maintains 24 hour responsibility for nursing care provided on the unit
  • Collaborates with physicians and other members of the Health Care Team to assure the delivery of optimum age appropriate patient care
  • provides hospital supervision as required by the Division of Nursing
  • Participates in the development of Evidence based Standards of care for clinical area of responsibility
  • Assures employee compliance with hospital and Human Resources policies and procedures
  • Assures that employee competency and education requirements are satisfied as per hospital policy.
  • Participates in the Performance Improvement Program as defined by the organization and the Division of Nursing
  • Assures the provision of a safe employee/patient environment.
  • Maintains knowledge related to the operations of their department.
  • Works collaboratively with all levels of the hospital interdisciplinary team and promotes the team concept within their department and hospital wide.
  • Demonstrates positive customer service, fosters positive employee relations and assures that staff adheres to the Customer Service Behavioral Standards.
  • Is supportive of hospital initiatives and projects and functions as a positive change agent.
  • Participates in community service.

 Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:

  1. Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.
  2. Develops and submits departmental goals and objectives that are aligned with the Nursing and hospital strategic plans as required by the Division Administrator.
  3. Conducts Interviews, hires, evaluates, counsels and terminates employees as per hospital policy.
  4. Schedules staff based on budgeted staffing plan and department needs.
  5. Updates FTE component of staffing budgets on a continuous basis
  6. Develops and submits operating and capital budgets and reports variances as required to the Division Administrator.
  7. Assures compliance with governmental, state regulations and accreditation standards.
  8. Assures completion of staff orientation, annual and ongoing competency and education requirements.
  9. Provides house supervision as required by the Division of Nursing.
  10. Attends and participates in educational programs or activities to maintain current level of knowledge or expertise to manage department.
  11. Periodically provides direct patient care as needed.
  12. Participates and assures department involvement in ongoing Performance Improvement initiatives to support quality metrics such as core measures and patient satisfaction as required.
  13. Develops evidence based standards of care, policies and procedures, etc. as needed for area of responsibility.
  14. Ensures service excellence initiatives and achieves organizational goals for patient satisfaction.
  15. Attends all meetings as required.
  16. Conducts staff meetings monthly to update staff and/or address department issues and records meeting minutes for all staff.
  17. Utilizes multiple methodologies to communicate information.
  18. Adheres to safety standards for employees and patients.
  19. Participates in committees, task forces, projects, etc. as required.
  20. Submits all other work reports as required/requested by the Division Administrator.
  21. Integrates patient rights and nursing ethics into work practice
  22. Adheres to the tenets of the Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals
  23. Delegates activities to staff according to the tenets of the NYS Nurse Practice Act
  24. Adheres to the ANA Code of Nursing Ethics
  25. Adheres to all WPH standards of care, policies and procedures including dress code, code of conduct, behavioral standards, completion of annual mandatory education and completion of annual health assessment
  26. Creates and maintains a culture of shared governance
  27. Works with the Magnet program director to align initiative’s with the strategic plan and critical components of a Magnet Organization.
  28. Performs all other related duties as assigned.

 Education & Experience Requirements

  • Current NY State License
  • BSN required or be matriculated in a BSN program with plan for graduation by 1/1/2022 if hired prior to 2016 and by 1/1/2020 if hired between 2016 and 1/1/2018 and discussed with the Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services/CNO .
  • BLS certification (through American Heart Association) required
  • ACLS certification (through American Heart Association) preferred unless required by employees in the department supervised then the certification is required
  • Certification in area of specialty, or CNML (Certified Nurse Manager & Leader) preferred, but must be obtained within 3 years of hire date.
  • Demonstrates a basic knowledge of management skills
  • Previous management/leadership experience preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years relevant acute care experience
  • Ability to function as a staff RN
  • Demonstrates excellence in clinical skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

 Physical/Mental Demands/Requirements & Work Environment

  • May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital’s SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be accessed through the hospital’s Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.
  • Must be able to move about the department and hospital constantly while attending to needs of patients, visitors and staff.
  • Requires continuous communication with patients, staff and visitors of all educational levels.
  • Requires frequent use of computers and other office equipment.
  • Required to move objects up to fifty (50) pounds and must be able to move patients of all weights with a minimum assist of one (1) or assistive device/equipment per White Plains Hospital Safe Patient Handling Policy.
  • Must be able to rapidly assess and respond to situational needs of patients, staff and visitors.
  • Must be able to adapt to a high stress environment with frequent interruptions.
