Department Summary

The Erb Memorial Union (EMU) is a department of the Division of Student Life at the center of the beautiful University of Oregon campus. The EMU is a multifaceted auxiliary service that employs more than 90 professional staff and 200 student staff who are dedicated to service and care in all we do. Since 1950, the Erb Memorial Union (EMU) has been the gathering place for campus activities, community interaction, and socializing at the University of Oregon. The EMU welcomes more than 15,000 daily users during the academic year, including students, faculty, staff, community partners, and visitors to campus. Our mission is to provide an open, inclusive, and resource-rich community where students and staff collaborate to inspire and sustain extraordinary programs and services that promote diversity, social interaction, and growth. The EMU is student learning and development centered and engages a student advisory board involved in shaping the department's character and scope. We provide students with a safe place to explore new ideas and take risks, an environment that fosters real-world experience, and a process that allows students to learn at their own pace—all within the framework of staff support and guidance.

Position Summary

The Associate Director for HR and Administrative Services reports to the Director of the Erb Memorial Union (EMU). This position manages the day-to-day human resource and administrative operations of the EMU and is responsible for providing the director with high-level strategic recommendations on a broad range of issues that cross all aspects of the Erb Memorial Union.
This position primarily provides leadership and direction regarding human resource management and administrative operations for the Erb Memorial Union and its 80 full-time and more than 200 student employees. This position is the primary liaison between the EMU and University HR, the Division of Student Life HR team, and other HR-related service centers across campus. The position oversees all aspects of the department’s recruitment and search processes, as well as employee labor relations for classified staff, student staff, and Officer of Administration positions in the EMU. The Associate Director is responsible for the human resource practices that shape an inclusive workplace supportive of employee care, exceptional performance, a commitment to access and equity, and high-quality standards of practice that include individual and departmental outcomes attainment. The Associate Director provides tools and resources to support the recruitment, retention, and ongoing development of a diverse and exceptional workforce. This position is responsible for the development of processes that support department, division, and university goals and standards, including timekeeping, employee compensation, and managerial support/training for program and service managers, and serves as a general resource to departmental leadership, managers, staff, and campus colleagues on human resources issues and best practices.
The Associate Director for HR and Administrative Services, as part of the EMU Leadership Team, supports the department and director in providing strategic thinking and process management for the administrative and operational needs of the EMU. The Associate Director serves as a liaison to the Student Life Shared Services Center and coordinates ongoing communication and support. This position also has shared oversight of the EMU’s overall budget administrative processes and communications to EMU Budget managers, supporting procurement, P-card reconciliation, and contracting processes.
The Associate Director supervises the EMU Central Administration team, including the EMU Central Office Coordinator, the EMU Facilities Service Center Coordinator, and several student employees. Responsibilities include hiring, training, evaluation, and development.
The Associate Director for HR and Administrative Services is a member of the department’s Senior Leadership Team, the Extended Leadership Team, and provides leadership and oversight of the EMU administrative team to ensure quality service to all members of the EMU community.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five years experience in human resources management.
  • Three years experience in operations management.
  • Three years experience in supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce.
  • SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certification.
  • Experience managing HR functions in a unionized environment.
  • Experience with Banner financial reports.
  • Experience working in higher education.
  • Experience with employee and labor relations.
