Position Description
This position is permanent, full-time (9-month), general funded and tenure-track to begin approximately August 2024 or as soon thereafter as possible. Review of applications will begin on December 4, 2023 and will continue until the position is filled.

The School of Life Sciences (SoLS) at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa (UHM) invites applications for a permanent, full-time (9-month) tenure-track Assistant Professor faculty position in Conservation Biology. We welcome applications from biologists working in any area of conservation research. We are searching for a colleague who will facilitate collaboration among conservation programs inside and outside of UHM, and contribute to the development of a professional master’s degree in conservation biology. We encourage applications from scholars who will incorporate Hawaiian ecological knowledge into their teaching and research, and who will contribute to addressing conservation problems in the Pacific.

The successful candidate will join an integrative life sciences program with broad interests in conservation, evolution, ecology, organismal biology, and cell and molecular biology, offering undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Biology, Botany, Microbiology, Marine Biology, Cell and Molecular Biology, and Zoology. Duties and Responsibilities
 
The duties of this position include establishing a vigorous extramurally funded research program, publishing research in leading academic journals, providing mentoring and research opportunities for undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars, teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, providing service to the School, University, profession, and community, and performing related tasks as assigned.
 
Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate and graduate courses in conservation biology and/or related topics, as well as development of new courses in the applicant’s area of expertise.
 
This position will also be responsible for building collaborative relationships with conservation programs such as the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit https://pcsuhawaii.org/ and Lyon Arboretum https://manoa.hawaii.edu/lyon/, particularly to facilitate internship opportunities for SoLS students in real-world management contexts. A long-term goal of SoLS is to develop a professional master’s degree program to train students for conservation careers; the successful applicant is expected to contribute to this vision.
 
Minimum Qualifications
 
1. Earned Ph.D. in a conservation-related field by time of hire.
2. Evidence of research productivity.
3. University teaching experience.
 
Desirable Qualifications

1. Postdoctoral research experience in biology or a conservation-related field.
2. Ability to work in a diverse and multicultural environment, with a demonstrated commitment to broaden participation and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as commitment to a safe and inclusive campus environment.
3. Experience building relationships between academic units and governmental and independent organizations involved in conservation-focused natural resource management.
4. Experience or interest in conservation of island ecosystems, restoration ecology, invasive species ecology, conservation of rare species, and related fields, particularly in the Pacific.
5. Experience or interest in developing place-based research questions and/or teaching approaches in the context of UHM being a Native Hawaiian place of learning
