These topics fall into priority areas for the University and the State of Hawai‘i in general. Successful candidates would have opportunities to collaborate by means of a diverse range of initiatives in the Department and the University. Successful candidates will be expected to be comfortable with teaching a range of courses in systems and data science, such as graduate and undergraduate courses in random processes, probability, linear systems, control, signal processing, communications, machine learning, and similar topics.

Current enrollment is approximately 300 undergraduate and 60 graduate students with 23 faculty members. Collaboration, funding opportunities, resources, and research exposure may be found through the department’s involvement and affiliation with a $3 million NSF Research and Traineeship Award to re-envision graduate education (which includes the call areas as priority areas), a $5 million NSF CyberCorps Scholarship for Service Program (SFS); the NSA/DHS National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Research (CAE-R); the NSF AI Research Institute (focusing on dynamic systems); and the NSF Center for Science of Information (focusing on big data, information theory, and machine learning). UHM is engaged in building a culturally diverse, equitable, and inclusive educational environment with a strong emphasis on research and graduate education.

The University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM) campus is dedicated to becoming a Native Hawaiian Place of Learning, a place that is responsive to Native Hawaiians and reflective of Indigenous Hawai‘i where all can learn, grow, connect, and heal from. UHM is also a designated Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation Campus Center.
