UConn Health invites applications for a Research Assistant 1 position in the Department of Cell Biology. The successful candidate will assist research on three dimensional tissue organization including mouse kidney, liver, ovary, spleen and bone. An additional project will involve microinjection of oocytes. The candidate will work with two research associates a faculty member and research personnel from collaborating labs.

Schedule: 40 hours per week, schedule dependent on lab needs.Â
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Fixation, dissection, processing and embedding tissue.
Cutting and collecting seral sections from the embedded tissue
Labeling the sections for basic morphology, immunoflurescence or in situ hybridization
Imaging the sections by light or electron microscopy.
Assisting in the reconstruction of 3D image data and analysis.
Help to maintain mouse colony
Cardiac perfusion of mice to fix tissues
Process tissue samples to electron microscopy (osmication, embedding in epon)
Microtomy using an ultramicrotome for 60 - 500 nm thick sections
Imaging a field emission scanning electron microscope
Staining by standard histological stains
Preparation of tissues for immunofluorescence and in situ hybridization
Imaging by bright field and fluorescence microscopy
Micromanipulation and microinjection of oocytes
Learn new techniques relevant to research exigencies
Work productively with other member of the laboratory
Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:
Basic knowledge of research protocols, principles and procedures; basic knowledge of scientific techniques such as tissue culturing, reagent/solution preparation, staining, etc.; basic knowledge of experimental design, mathematics, statistics, computer applications, laboratory equipment and procedures; basic knowledge of a science such as; chemistry, biology, microbiology, pharmacology; basic knowledge of physical and data resources in application scientific disciplines; oral and written communication skills; ability to identify, produce, organize, analyze, evaluate and interpret data.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
General Experience:
Bachelors degree in a field of biological science. Degrees in other areas may be substituted on a case by case basis.

Substitutions Allowed:
College training in a relevant discipline may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equaling one-half year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.Â
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Incumbents in this class may be required to undergo periodic tests or immunizations for communicable diseases.
Experience with mouse handling, particularly cardiac perfusion of fixation
Experience with micoscopic sectioning and fluorescence imunohistochemistry
Experience with digital image processing
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Experience organizing data for presentations and manuscripts

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience with pulling glass micro-needles and with using micromanipulators
Some familiarity with using an ultramicrotome

Working Conditions:
Incumbents in this class may be occasionally required to lift heavy objects such as standard laboratory equipment and/or trays/boxes or glassware; may be exposed to such hazards as broken glass, toxic vapors radioactive materials, and toxic or disease carrying substances.
Full time , 12 month staff position renewed annually, based on performance and funding.
The successful candidate's academic appointment will be at the Farmington campus
