Departmental Overview
The Graduate Student Services Advisor is the only position that provides policy and analytical support and administration for the graduate student population within the Department of Linguistics. The position also serves as the sole staff support for the Designated Emphasis in Indigenous Language Revitalization program.
The Department, within the Social Sciences Division of the College of Letters and Science, is highly regarded in the linguistics community. Our faculty and students have close contacts with other departments and programs on campus, including Anthropology, Cognitive Science, Computer Science, Education, Native American Studies, Philosophy, Psychology, and many language and literature departments. We are home to several laboratories and a language archive. The department consists of 25 faculty, including adjuncts and emeritus, approximately 40 graduate students and 100 undergraduate majors. We also hosts post-docs, visiting scholars, researchers and 4 staff FTE.

Responsibilities
Academic Advising
Advises faculty and graduate students on the departmental/college and university policies and procedures.
Reviews students' progress and advises students and faculty on requirements for degree/program completion.
Identifies students with progression problems and recommends interventions.
Devises curriculum planning in collaboration chair and faculty, and with other departments.
Regularly updates and maintains the linguistics graduate student handbook.
Makes referrals to off campus and community resources.
Provide primary back-up support to undergraduate students in the absence of the undergraduate student services advisor.
Recruitment and Admissions
Responsible for all aspects of the graduate admission process.
Advises prospective applicants on necessary academic preparation.
Appropriateness of program as it pertains to the prospective applicant's goals.
Evaluates domestic and international transcripts for degree eligibility, initiates and arranges student recruitment visits to Berkeley, helps maintain a portion of the department website related to graduate students.
Financial Aid
Oversees the processing, evaluation, and awarding of graduate student fellowships, grants, scholarships, and other awards.
Advises graduate students on the financial aid options on campus and extra-mural fellowship opportunities.
Oversees processes for equitable assignment of GSIs and coordinates GSI assignment each term.
Full responsibility for financial administration and budget of all funds pertaining to graduate student support within the Linguistics department.
Student Conduct
Responsible for interpreting campus policies and advising students and faculty on student conduct, student grievances, disputes and issues regarding discrimination.
Events
Responsible for organizing the new graduate student orientation, general meeting and reception held each fall.
Assists with commencement and winter luncheon.
Visiting Scholar Program
Responsible for all aspects of the visiting scholar and postdoctoral affairs (VSPA) program within the Linguistics department.
Advises both faculty sponsors and scholars regarding VSPA policies and procedures as set by the Vice Chancellor for Research office and the Berkeley International Office (BIO).
Advises scholars regarding visa regulations, requirements and procedures as set by the US Department of Homeland Security.
UCPath
Manages position numbers, position funding, and submission of DirectRetros for the department.
Submit/manage all hiring of ASE/GSR and STDT title.
Program Development
Explore opportunities to enhance and further expand our graduate program.
Develops, enhances and maintain an alumni network by using social media, email list and other mediums as needed.
Plans, designs, and provides workshops for grad students to help job within and outside of academia.
Miscellaneous Duties
Preparer/submit transactions for BearBUY, BFS (Vendor and BluCard Reconciliation back up), Reimbursement System (TRV, ENT, EXP) BluCard holder.
Visa processing.
Serves as department key controller, backup scheduler and enrollment management for the department.
Complete other tasks as needed.
Required Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of and/or ability to learn UCPath (Position Management; Funding Entry Direct Retro), BFS (Vendoring; BluCard reconciliation), BearBUY, CalCentral/SIS systems (Student Awards, Enrollment management, Scheduling).
Knowledge of and/or ability to learn University and departmental principles and procedures.
Knowledge of complex U.S. visa and immigration procedures, compliance issues, and employment eligibility /authorization for international students and scholars.
Salary & Benefits
This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $51,700.00 to $74,700.00. For information on the comprehensive benefits package offered by the University visit:
