Departmental Overview
UC Berkeley Extension is the continuing education branch of the University of California, Berkeley. Extension offers more than 2,000 courses per year in a variety of subjects both online and in the classroom. Extension's administrative departments and units include student records (transcripts), registration, scheduling, international student services, facilities, financial services, and the cashier's office. In addition to the main Berkeley center, it has responsibility for the maintenance and operation of regional centers in San Francisco (Spear Street), Belmont and other leased facilities in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Berkeley Summer Sessions, Study Abroad, University Extension, and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (SSALLEX) is the trusted educational provider for students at all stages of their academic and professional journeys. As the extended educational division of the University of California, Berkeley, SSALLEX fulfills an essential part of the University's mission to extend access to this world-renowned university's research and scholarship to a global community.
A vibrant, inclusive, and dynamic organization, SSALLEX welcomes 60,000 visiting, current, and potential Berkeley students studying across a wide range of programs, including year-round courses, Fall Program for Freshmen, post-baccalaureate programs, visiting student experiences, study abroad programs, global internships, summer minors, professional certificates, and year-round offerings for older adults. Responsibilities
This position involves a wide range of student services duties and responsibilities for an academic department/school/college or organization. Provides assistance to the dean/chair, faculty, and students in academic advising, recruitment, admissions, financial aid, the evaluation and awarding of fellowships and block grant funds, student orientation and events, career counseling, and related programs.
Applies professional Student Services concepts in providing a variety of student services to all student populations and affiliated international institutions and organizations served by the division; makes recommendation of processes or policy improvement with a focus to better service international students and the affiliated representatives; creates communication materials, including email updates, notifications, website, FAQs and other channels.
Academic Advising : Provides advice and assistance to students and international affiliated institution representatives on language and visa requirements; assists students and affiliated representatives in enrollment, enrollment changes, including cancellation/withdrawals from the program, course selection, other non-degree academic questions, and similar issues.
Recruitment and Admissions : Advises prospective applicants and international institutions and organizations on necessary academic preparation, application, requirements and other related questions.
Financial Matters : Advises students on payment options and deadlines; addresses any payment- and fee-related questions and issues in collaboration with other campus units.
Student Conduct : Provides information to students regarding campus policies and procedures on student conduct.
Student Orientation : Conducts, coordinates, or participates in orientations of new visiting students and new affiliated international institutions and organizations; creates materials to be included in the orientation packet or program.
Events : Assists in the planning and implementation of student programming and other events planned for the visiting student population and organizations.
Works with the Student Services team in assisting all student service processes during the high-volume period, all-hands-on-desk situations.
Required Qualifications
Position will be a Designated School Official and per U.S Federal regulations, employee must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.
Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Knowledge of higher education-specific computer application programs and pertinent databases.
Knowledge of higher education processes and procedures.
Understanding of higher education rules and regulations.
Interpersonal skills. Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
Skills in service orientation, active listening, and critical thinking.
Ability in problem identification, and reasoning.
Ability to multi-task, verbal communication, written communication, organization
Education/Training:
Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of the campus-specific systems (Campus Solutions/CalCentral/Slate).
Experience with federal visa regulations.
Experience working with international students, institutions, agencies, or experience in studying abroad.
Knowledge of foreign language(s).
Salary & Benefits
This is a full time 100% non-exempt Contract appointment that ends two years from the date of hire with the possibility of extension.
Salary is commensurate with experience between the range of $51,900.00 - $87,900.00 ( $24.86 - $42.10 / hr)
