As the first point of contact for most visitors-online and offline-we tell the Berkeley story to inspire audiences and elevate the image of the university. We partner closely with various campus audiences-from the chancellor, deans and faculty members, to staff, students and alumni-as well as external media organizations who can amplify Berkeley's important contributions across a wide range of subjects.

Responsibilities
As the communications manager, you'll develop and execute internal communications plans, deliverables and marketing brand strategies that inform, engage and inspire audiences. You'll partner with stakeholders to identify the appropriate marketing and communications tactics that will contribute to project goals, drive value and further the mission of the university. You'll then work independently to develop a wide variety of communications media, including written, visual, digital and electronic.
Responsibilities
Content development and planning - works with stakeholders to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long and short-term strategic communications plans. Is an excellent multi-faceted communicator with strong written and verbal communications skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively to achieve communications objectives. Researches, writes, edits and produces a variety of communication pieces in a variety of venues including written, visual, digital, and electronic communications. Has the ability to understand and simplify complex ideas to develop effective communications that meet the needs of a diverse range of audiences. Maintains the confidentiality of sensitive subject matter and operates with the highest degree of integrity and discretion.
Project management - leads ad hoc work teams, schedules meetings and develops and executes plans to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget. Coordinates and manages work of internal and external vendors and student workers, including photographers, videographers, writers and others, to achieve project outcomes.
Community manager - monitors, moderates and responds to questions and complaints via email and social media. Earns trust and credibility with internal audiences and diffuses contentious situations. Fosters dialogue and develops strategies to build a strong sense of community and belonging within the UC Berkeley community.
Internal communications network - coordinates activities and professional development opportunities to support the broad network of communications professionals embedded across UC Berkeley. Plans, coordinates and hosts regular meetings of the communications community of practice. Trains and supports users on centrally-managed tools and technologies. Develops strategies to ensure alignment across decentralized teams.
Marketing and brand strategy - works closely with the executive director of marketing and communications to create, plan, produce and evaluate marketing, advertising, and promotional materials to implement marketing strategies and objectives. Purchases promotional materials including displays, signage, pre-packs, promotional printing, coupons, premiums, art, photography, etc.
Strategic advisor - provides advice and counsel to project stakeholders on all aspects of communications, including strategic planning, effective messaging, and problem resolution. Seen as a trusted advisor and communications expert. Provides informed advice and counsel to stakeholders and influences decisions to ensure brand compliance and adherence to communications best practices.
Required Qualifications
Advanced knowledge and understanding of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.
Advanced knowledge and understanding of technical applications to direct professional technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media, and applications.
Advanced knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation and advanced skills to write clear, lively, engaging, compelling and effective copy in a variety of styles appropriate to target audiences and the broader public.
Knowledge of computer applications for publishing, image handling, and web production.
Advanced skills to create, develop, and implement long and short-term strategic communication plans.
Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills.
Excellent analytical, critical thinking, project management, and problem recognition, avoidance, and resolution skills.
Advanced skills to advise and consult management on all aspects of communications, ranging from developing effective communication strategies to appropriately responding to inquiries regarding sensitive or complex issues or information.
Advanced knowledge of appropriate editorial style and publication guidelines.
Skill to maintain absolute confidentiality.
Advanced skills in developing, designing and implementing creative promotional and advertising strategies.
Education
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced knowledge of the organization, including its mission, vision, goals, policies, and infrastructure; strong knowledge of current affairs and issues in higher education and/or health sciences.
Salary & Benefits
