Departmental Overview
Made possible by a $20-million commitment from the Paul and Stacy Jacobs Foundation, Berkeley Engineering launched the Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation at the Clinton Global Initiative in June 2013. The Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation expands the role of design in undergraduate and masters-level engineering education at the
University of California, Berkeley. As the Institute works to further its mission of educating leading innovators at the intersection of design and technology, it provides students with hands-on experiences and opportunities to work in interdisciplinary teams to address real societal issues. Students are challenged to approach the entire cycle of design,
from identifying user needs to rapid prototyping to commercialization and manufacturing, from an integrated vantage point. We accomplish these goals through a suite of offerings that include curricular, co-curricular and public programs. Core programs within the Jacobs Institute include:
The Berkeley Certificate in Design Innovation, an undergraduate certificate offered in partnership with the
Haas School of Business, College of Letters & Science, and College of Environmental Design.
a curriculum of 6-8 design-focused courses offered fall, spring and summer, for which the institute recruits
lecturers and faculty.
a makerspace staffed by professional and student workers which is accessed by 1200 students each
semester.
mentorship and co-curricular programming for students, such as the Innovation Catalyst program.
supporting 15 design and innovation courses from campus departments and 25 clubs and decals each
semester by offering access to high quality teaching, meeting and event space.
public events and speaker series.
a professional Master of Design degree, offered in partnership with the College of Environmental Design and
housed within the Jacobs Institute.
partnerships with companies and international universities.
The Jacobs Institute Communications & Programs Officer has key responsibilities in events, marketing & communications, and program development and coordination. The role involves activities associated with reaching, serving, and engaging both external and internal constituencies through programs, events, products, and services.
Constituencies include prospective and current students, faculty, alumni, local community, government, parents, as well as the general public. The Jacobs Institute is housed in Jacobs Hall, a 24,000 square foot building equipped with design studios and equipment rooms featuring the latest in digital fabrication technologies.

Responsibilities
35% Marketing & Communications
Develops, implements and assesses communication strategies (both web and print) for all programs, services, and activities of the Institute, including the
masters and certificate programs. These strategies will be designed to inform a range of external and internal constituencies for the comprehensive suite of
programs, policies, and practices.
Leads content planning, production, and management for Institute social media, website, newsletter, publications (e.g. compendiums of MDes student work),
commencement program, and other public-facing materials and special projects.
Proactively generates content for all communications channels, inclusive of web, social media and on-site signage.
Manages development and production of collateral materials and promotional gift items.
Manages Institute's voices, brands, and style guides; builds and maintains brand across all communications and collateral, for all programs, activites, and services.
Responsible for marketing and social media campaigns for academic programs at Jacobs Institute, including the graduate program and revenue-generating summer
programs. Compiles and reviews marketing analytics for all campaigns.
Supervises student assistants in graphic design, website management, storytelling, and publicity activities. Working with MDes leadership, co-manages
MDes Creative Catalysts.
30% Program & Event Coordination
Manages planning, execution, and assessment of programs and events for a range of audiences, including: the Design Conversations lectures (3-4 times per
semester) and Design Field Notes seminars (6-9 per semester), semester design showcases, biannual Industry Advisory Board meetings, open houses and
community events such as Cal Day, homecoming, other workshops, recruitment and yield events.
Manages details of events including advertising, catering, room setups, RSVPs, and staffing flows. Oversees contributions from Administrative Officer and other
staff. Events range from 40-person lectures to multi-day showcases, featuring student presenters from 15 courses and hundreds of attendees. Events may
also be online, in-person, or hybrid.
Works with event guests, presenters, and campus partners, and others to ensure quality experience for all.
Actively seeks out gap areas in outreach and i nitiates, develops and implements programs, events and/or communication strategies designed to inform external constituencies of institutional programs, activities, policies, and practices; constituencies may include the general public, prospective students, parents, donors, campus visitors, government, industry, and/or community representatives.
15% External Relations and Outreach
Manages tour program, visits and tours for a range of constituents, including the general public, prospective students, parents, donors, campus visitors, industry
and/or community representative.
Supports Industry Relations initiatives and VIP visits and relationships.
Responds to inquiries about Jacobs Institute programs, events, and initiatives.
Develops content for and supports special outreach programs and events.
10% Support for Strategic Initiatives:
Supports the development of proposals and strategic initiatives, through writing and making editorial contributions to grant proposals, one-pagers, annual reports and other documents.
10% Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Thorough knowledge of basic concepts, principles, and procedures of building and maintaining effective relations with internal and external constituencies.
Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communications, tact and political acumen to effectively represent the Jacobs Institute.
Proactive and curious.
Thorough research, analytical and critical thinking skills, including sound judgment and decision-making skills and skill to correctly identifying real and potential problems, advising management as required, and proposing effective strategic resolutions.
Skill in project management, including event planning and meeting deadlines.
Applicable computer skills, including use of Microsoft Office suite and Adobe Creative Suite. Web editing and design skills.
Knowledge of communications platforms, including social media, and best practices.
Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
Thorough knowledge of the Jacobs Institute, its mission, goals, objectives, programs, achievements, infrastructure and issues of concern.
