Town Of Cary is Hiring a SEASONAL PROGRAM ASSISTANT II- OUTDOOR ADVENTURE Near Cary, NC

Join Cary's Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources team this summer as a Program Assistant II for Outdoor Adventure to help implement our unique and exciting outdoor camps!
We are seeking enthusiastic and organized individuals at least 18 years of age who love playing outdoors and are eager to share that passion with youth. This position will work closely with our Outdoor Recreation team to organize and implement our specialty outdoor summer camps at Bond Park and Cary Action Sports.
Outdoor Recreation camps take place at Bond Park and cover a variety of themes including archery, boating, ropes, and outdoor skills. Action Sports camps take place at Godbold Park and focus on skateboarding, BMX, rollerblading, and scootering (instruction is provided by a separate staff member). Program Assistant IIs will provide oversight of camp operations, support the delivery of programs, create activities and rain plans, engage youth between activities, and work with other traditional day camps across Cary to coordinate outdoor enrichment activities. 
This is a seasonal (June-August), non-benefited position, up to 40 hours a week, with a maximum of 999 hours. Camp hours are Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Applicants must be available to attend training during the week of June 17-June 21 and should be generally available to work June 21-August 16. Exceptions may be made to accommodate school schedules.
  • Conducts daily camper check-in and check-out;
  • Mediates camper issues/discipline and does necessary paperwork;
  • Participates in all programming as group supervisor alongside campers;
  • Supervises camp staff when appropriate;
  • Provides oversight of all camp staff and operations;
  • Assists outdoor recreation program instructors with program delivery and group management;
  • Conducts primary parent/guardian communication including camper attendance; discipline; accommodations and inclusion services; missing lunches, clothes or other necessary items; late arrival or pick-up issues; and camper injuries and accidents;
  • Supervises all off-site field trips;
  • Conveys daily camp information and communicates with campers and families as needed;
  • Purchases supplies and admissions for camp field trips;
  • Creates and leads alternate programming and rain plans; 
  • Conducts late camper check-ins as needed;
  • Helps with room set up for special camp activities;
  • Ensures that daily staff cleaning schedule is followed and assists with cleaning when needed;
  • Provides coverage in camp administrative office as needed;
  • Drives Cary vehicles for field trips.
General knowledge of camp programs; General knowledge of equipment and supplies required for camp operation; Good organizational and time management skills; Strong oral and written communication skills; Ability to acquire knowledge of Cary policies, procedures, and services of the department; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with general public and with other staff; Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; Ability to exercise judgment in controlling the activities, behavior, and safety of camp attendees. 
  • Requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate degree with major course work in recreation, education, or a related field
  • Requires at least one year or one summer season working in as a camp counselor, camp administrator, teacher, or similar position
  • Prefers two or more years of experience teaching youth in a classroom setting, or attainment of a bachelor's degree in recreation management, physical education, elementary/middle/high school education, or a closely related field
  • Prefers experience in leading outdoor recreation and adventure activities including action sports, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, orienteering, archery and backpacking (training will be provided)
  • Prefers experience driving a 15-passenger van, or other similar large vehicle (training will be provided)
  • CPR and First-aid Certification preferred (training will be provided)
Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment. 
Requires a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
