Town Of Cary is Hiring a WATER UTILITIY MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR Near Cary, NC

We're seeking a skilled individual to join our award winning team at the Cary/Apex Water Treatment Facility (CAWTF) and Remote Water Infrastructure (RWI). As a key member, you'll undertake challenging technical and administrative tasks, including machinery and equipment maintenance, repair, installation, and replacement. Your responsibilities will encompass overseeing the maintenance and repair program for various water treatment facilities, intake systems, pump stations, storage tanks, and control valves. Additionally, you'll play a vital role in managing and administering our water utility systems asset management program.
This position reports to the Cary/Apex Water Treatment Facility Manager and involves supervising maintenance personnel at the water treatment facility and remote water infrastructure sites. Anticipated Hiring Range: $82,804- $98,987
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive maintenance program for the CAWTF and RWI including regular corrective, preventive and predictive maintenance; 
  • Supervises maintenance staff including planning work assignments, conducting briefings, providing counseling, and overall supervisory support in compliance with work place directives and Town of Cary personnel policies;
  • Provides on call maintenance support as directed by the Cary/Apex Water Treatment Facility Manager;
  • Maintains spare parts, maintenance supplies, and tools inventory;
  • Tracks equipment and infrastructure system warranties, manufacturer inspections, condition assessments, and life cycle operating and maintenance parameters;
  • Coordinates work order management systems for tracking equipment and infrastructure maintenance needs;
  • Reviews plans, drawings, specifications, and shop drawings for new equipment;
  • Manages contractors, vendors, suppliers, and manufacturers for maintenance projects;
  • Maintains equipment with a focus on asset management and life-cycle planning;
  • Oversees the maintenance of all remote water infrastructure including elevated and ground storage tanks, large control valve vaults, and booster pump stations;
  • Oversees the maintenance of all water treatment infrastructure including raw and finished water pumps, filters, superpulsator clarifiers, fiber optic network, chemical systems, ozone system, and residuals treatment equipment;
  • Oversees the maintenance and installation of security systems and cameras including supervision of specialty contractors and vendors;
  • Oversees specialty contractors performing maintenance work on complex equipment including generators, electrical switchgear, VFDs, large pumps, ozone generators, etc. 
  • Performs maintenance training and reviews the success of all maintenance projects;
  • Participates in plant renovations and expansions from the maintenance perspective;
  • Oversees staff who dismantle and overhaul varied plant equipment such as gauges, control valves, instrumentation, pumps, chemical feed pumps and appurtenances, engines, and generators;
  • Maintains and installs all new equipment and structures and/or oversees specialty contractors performing this work;
  • Maintains a working knowledge of current information on all building and electrical code requirements and guidelines for operations;
  • Works with engineers and contractors to get the best equipment and installations;
  • Discusses malfunctions of plant equipment under warranty with manufacturer representatives;
  • Assists CAWTF Manager in preparing maintenance budget and monitors expenditures;
  • Advises CAWTF Manager on equipment purchases and conditions;
  • Oversees staff and/or contractors performing plumbing and carpentry repairs and installations;
  • Interviews, hires and trains maintenance personnel;
  • Conducts performance evaluations of maintenance personnel;
  • Coordinates training for maintenance staff;
  • Manages and coordinates safety program for maintenance projects;
  • Supports and develops plans for total facility maintenance including: buildings, grounds, property, equipment, systems, and visual appearance;
  • Performs other job-related tasks as required.
Comprehensive knowledge of the installation, repair and maintenance of the mechanical, hydraulic and electrical components of water treatment equipment; comprehensive knowledge of installing, maintaining, and repairing large electrical, plumbing, pumping, instrumentation, SCADA, and mechanical systems; comprehensive knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the work; knowledge of ozone, water treatment chemicals, distribution pressure zones, elevated storage tanks and their components, and residuals processing; skill in the use and care of tools of the trade; thorough knowledge of electrical and building code requirements; general knowledge of computer operations; ability to utilize a maintenance software system; ability to determine improper operation of water pumping and treatment equipment, and to take proper remedial action; ability to comprehend and follow complex oral and written directions; ability to supervise the work of skilled maintenance technicians; ability to work alongside maintenance staff on repair projects under adverse conditions; ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing; ability to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays in order to meet emergency utility system management needs as they may arise.Required:
-Any combination of education and experience equivalent to an Bachelor’s Degree in environmental science, mechanical technology, or related field and considerable electrical and mechanical maintenance experience including the repair, installation and maintenance of water or wastewater treatment and pumping equipment. Considerable supervisory experience is also required.
-Possession of Water Treatment Operator's Grade "B" level or higher certification from the State Board of Certification or ability to obtain within 1 year of employment if out of state candidate.
-Requires possession of a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
-Possession of Water Distribution Operator’s Grade “B” level or ability to obtain this certification within 1 year of employment.
-Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment.
