The Road Home Dane County is Hiring a Development Director Near Madison, WI

Position Summary

The Development Director is responsible for coordinating and implementing the organization's fundraising strategies to support The Road Home's ability to provide supportive services and housing assistance to individuals and families experiencing homelessness. Duties include donor cultivation, direct appeals, event planning, and working in partnership with the financial development staff and the Development Committee of the board of directors. This role requires someone passionate about helping connect people who are able to bring resources to the organization, and someone who is a natural relationship builder. Prior experience in fundraising would be valuable, bringing organized processes to retain the large base of generous current supporters and build new fiscal community donors and partners to make a huge difference in the lives of people experiencing homelessness in Dane County.

Position Responsibilities and Essential Functions

Major Donor Fundraising

  • Support the fundraising efforts of the Executive Director in securing new and renewed gifts.
    • With the Executive Director, create and manage an organizational budget; track and report on progress to goal to ED and Board, including contracts, gifts, and pledges.
  • Serve as the primary relationship manager for this portfolio of prospects, developing and implementing a written donor strategy and relationship record of all interactions, using Blackbaud's Tapestry software.
    • Communicate with our donor portfolio through face-to-face cultivation, solicitation and stewardship meetings, and written strategies; ensure that each major donor and prospect has a thoughtful design and timeline for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Develop solicitation strategies for donors/prospects to support the organization's annual fund, planned giving, and growth campaigns; ensure designs are compatible and maximize opportunities with other existing campaigns and appeals.
    • Work with the Development team to screen and prepare profiles of current and prospective donors; establish and refine benchmarks for department research processes as needed.
  • Manage the design and implementation of donor recognition at loyal and significant donor levels.
    • Ensure proper donor recognition in all publications and oversee accurate donor lists for those publications.

Event planning

  • Supervise planning and execution of fundraising and cultivation events, including the well-attended annual Road Home breakfast every November.
    • Collaborate with the development team to organize giving events: recruit guest speakers, speak at each session, and revise scripts and other elements as necessary.
  • Investigate the use of social media for donor development and cultivation
    • Develop video strategy for presentations bi-annually.

Record Keeping

  • Maintain a list of potential financial donors, including corporations, foundations, and individuals.
    • Ensure that all data is captured in the database tracking system.
    • Ensure the data tracked is complete and correct.
  • Run reports as needed.
    • Submit all required reports to funding sources by assigned deadlines and ensure compliance of grants and funders.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Oversee the financial development office and staff.
    • Assign, plan, and oversee the work of departmental staff.
  • Conduct performance evaluations that are timely and constructive.
    • Handle discipline and termination of employees as needed, per TRH Human Resources policy.
  • Coordinate the Development Committee and subcommittees to achieve deadlines and ensure members complete their assigned tasks.

Required Education and Experience

  • BA/BS required
  • 2-3 years of development and/or community relations experience preferred.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Attention to detail.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Interest in homelessness and housing trends
