DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:

DC Central Kitchen (DCCK) is a national leader in the future of hunger relief, empowering the next generation of leaders to implement innovative models for combatting hunger, developing food systems, and helping communities to help themselves. The Culinary Operations department is an integral part of this innovative approach with a focus on consistent and efficient preparation of high-quality, delicious, and nutritious food products, food safety, and stellar customer service. The Materials Management team supports this department with inventory management, procurement, ordering and receiving, and waste management. 

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Materials Management Lead will provide direct supervision to the materials management assistants, ensuring efficient receiving, outbound, and inventory management of all products at DC Central Kitchen. This position will report directly to the Materials Manager and will work closely with the Kitchen, Transportation and Procurement teams. The Materials Management Lead will perform a critical role in ensuring that department goals are successfully achieved while coordinating the team’s effort in providing administrative, operational, and logistical support. The Lead will make certain all administrative responsibilities are completed with accuracy and issues are effectively communicated to appropriate team members and outside clients. The lead will help supervise the assistants and delegate tasks. This position requires strong organizational, customer service, mentoring, and supervisory skills, as well as independent judgment that is required to plan, prioritize, and organize a wide range of responsibilities. A strong commitment to DC Central Kitchen’s mission as well as the ability to work collaboratively and professionally with colleagues, students, visitors, customers, and members of the community are highly essential.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee assistants in meeting vendors as deliveries come in. Oversee assistant in receiving process by checking quality of all products and checking for any missing or shorted items based on invoices. 
  • Fill out Inbound Document with all vendor deliveries.
  • Receive communication from assistants on any Delivery issues via teams. 
  • Communicate with procurement about any shorts, quality issues or missing deliveries. 
  • Bring all invoices upstairs to the procurement desk at the end of each day. 
  • Ensure assistants put away all orders in correct storage areas. 
  • Ensure all storage areas are organized by shelf labels and clean. 
  • Ensure loading dock and hallways are kept clean and organized. 
  • When the manager is out, participate in all necessary meetings with production and kitchen managers. 
  • Receive pull sheets from production team and provide them to assistants.
  • Ensure assistants are available for production to pull product and put away product. 
  • Receive freezer pull sheets from production and provide assistants with lists of items to pull from Freezer. 
  • Receive Healthy Corners production and pull sheets and provide to assistants. Oversee pulling and returning of all healthy corner’s product. 
  • Assist with returning unused products from daily production, switch label from program date to “Use First” opening items up for available inventory.
  • Guide the product for deliveries and outbound at the end of their day.
  • Print DCPS and Private Delivery sheets and provide them to assistants.
  • Print out any issue tickets regarding additional items to be added to DCPS Deliveries and provide them to assistants. (FFVP, or special cases that need to be sent to schools)
  • Assist with staging of outbound DCPS Deliveries (whole cases) for the next day using Delivery sheets. 
  • Track all donations in donation form. 
  • Take daily inventory of food items using inventory outline by 11am each day. (Monday-Friday and Sunday). 
  • Communicate with Procurement on inventory questions. 
  • Take Acme Inventory Monday and Thursday by 1pm. 
  • Take and enter Daily Healthy Corners inventory by 3pm (Sunday-Thursday). 
  • Coordinate the completion of monthly audits of all inventory storage areas and provide an update to Procurement team.
  • Answer questions, as needed, relating to products from procurement team on teams throughout shift.
  • Monitor email and teams chat throughout the day. 
  • Monitor and upkeep labels in storage areas.
  • Track daily quality assurance of produce: checking for any signs of near spoilage and collecting unusable and perishable items.
  • Conduct daily walks (3x a day) with kitchen manager of boxes, freezer, and dry storage.
  • Ensure team is following FIFO procedures. 
  • Take daily inventory of prepared product in box 113 and provide to kitchen manager at the end of the day. 
  • Remove any items from boxes that need to go to BioDigester. 
  • Track any product to be put in BioDigester in LeanPath. 
  • Perform other duties and tasks as required to maintain quality relationships with all our partners and customers and / or duties and tasks needed to drive the vision, mission, and values of DC Central Kitchen.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 1-2 years of direct experience in a related field
  • Graduate of Culinary Job Training program preferred Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, SharePoint) 
  • Must be inspired to teach, mentor, and develop emerging talent, including graduates of the Culinary Job Training program that are just entering the hospitality field
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with colleagues, students, and vendors
  • Demonstrated cultural competence and a commitment to the mission and values of DC Central Kitchen
  • Displays consistent professional and interpersonal leadership skills
  • Must have the ability to work well under pressure and lead by example
  • Committed to continuous learning and ongoing improvement and is self-motivated 
  • Pre-employment background check and drug test are required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Prolonged periods of standing
  • Must be capable of independent local travel
  • Must be able to attend occasional night and weekend events
  • May occasionally move Audio/Visual and other office equipment or lightweight items weighing up to 25 pounds for various meeting and event needs; Some functions of this position may require moderate physical activity, including transporting, positioning, installing, or removing office equipment items, such as printers, computers, phones, and so on
  • Will occasionally move about inside the office and commercial kitchen space to access supplies, materials, file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer; constantly positions self to access and maintain computer equipment; and must be able to remain in a stationery position for at least 50% of the time.
  • Must be able to work in an environment where exposure to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, fumes, dirt, smoke, loud noise, and a variety of odors is common
