The Allen Institute for AI is Hiring a Remote Technical Program Manager

Technical Program Manager - Semantic Scholar Academic Graph

Semantic Scholar is a free, A.I.-powered research tool for scientific literature. We have grown from a groundbreaking research project at the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence to a tool millions of scholars use every week. Our mission is to empower scholars with easy access to the most relevant information from the world's scientific literature. Our work has been featured in the New York Times, Wired, Nature, Science, and many other publications. One of the products we provide to the global research community is the Semantic Scholar Academic Graph API and datasets. These products are a free source of scholarly data for any developer to use to build projects to accelerate scientific progress.

We are looking for a Technical Program Manager to own all aspects of the Semantic Scholar Academic Graph (S2AG) products. We are a small, scrappy team and this role has many components. We are looking for someone with technical program and product management skills. You will work directly with our developer partners to understand their projects and needs. You will create business requirements, own the roadmap for our APIs and datasets, and work directly with our engineering team to launch new features. This role also has a technical account management component, where you will develop and grow relationships with our developer partners. You will understand our developer partners’ use cases, help them understand our capabilities, and help them onboard in order to drive their projects.

This is a new role on our team and is ideal for someone who is detail oriented, scrappy, and able to deal with ambiguity. We are looking for someone looking to roll up their sleeves and wear a lot of different hats in order to drive impact with our developer partners. This role sits on the Semantic Scholar Product team. In addition to working with our world class engineering and research teams, you will have support from other Product Managers, and our UX Research and Marketing team members to help drive your roadmap. If your ambition is to join a mission-driven team working at the cutting edge of product and technology, Semantic Scholar may be the perfect opportunity for you.

Your Next Challenge:

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Own roadmap for S2AG and API enhancements, including prioritization of new features, and business and technical requirements
  • Work with the engineering team to launch new features, and own go to market (GTM) for new launches
  • Identify beta users for new API features, help them onboard to the feature, gather feedback, and own launch criteria for new features
  • Own program management for the S2AG and API program, including defining new processes and workflows for managing partnership activities, on-going engagement for API users, reporting and success metrics, and outbound communications to partners
  • Technical account management of the program, including working with developer partners to understand and onboard onto our APIs, troubleshooting and investigating issues experienced by API users, and monitoring our shared Slack workspace to answer questions
  • Educate partners on our API and dataset offerings, and create relevant technical documentation
  • Evangelize S2AG products with external partners, including developing and delivering presentations, product demos, and owning communications across other channels to drive awareness and adoption of S2AG.
  • Own internal reporting and success metrics of S2AG products

What You’ll Need:

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science or related technical field or related experience
  • 2 years of experience in program management or similar professional experience
  • Experience managing technical projects and working with external partners on a technical product
  • History of teamwork and willingness to roll up one’s sleeves to get the job done

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience generating automated metrics to measure service and program effectiveness and consistency
  • Experience working with external and internal customers, partners and stakeholders to gather business requirements, develop program features and/or business process improvements and create technical designs
  • Experience overseeing a product roadmap, strategy, and definition

Who We Are:

The Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence is a non-profit research institute in Seattle founded by Paul Allen and headed by Professor Oren Etzioni. The core mission of AI2 is to contribute to humanity through high-impact research in artificial intelligence.

In addition to AI2’s core mission, we also aim to contribute to humanity through our treatment of each member of the AI2 Team. Some highlights are:

  • We are a learning organization – because everything AI2 does is ground-breaking, we are learning every day. Similarly, through weekly AI2 Academy lectures, a wide variety of world-class AI experts as guest speakers, and our commitment to your personal on-going education, AI2 is place where you will have opportunities to continue learning alongside your coworkers.
  • We value diversity - We seek to hire, support, and promote people from all genders, ethnicities, and all levels of experience regardless of age. We particularly encourage applications from women, non-binary individuals, people of color, members of the LGBTQA community, and people with disabilities of any kind.
  • We value inclusion - We understand the value that people's individual experiences and perspectives can bring to an organization, and we are building a culture in which all voices are heard, respected and considered.
  • We emphasize a healthy work/life balance – we believe our team members are happiest and most productive when their work/life balance is optimized. While we value powerful research results which drive our mission forward, we also value dinner with family, weekend time, and vacation time. We offer generous paid vacation and sick leave as well as family leave.
  • We are collaborative and transparent – we consider ourselves a team, all moving with a common purpose. We are quick to cheer our successes, and even quicker to share and jointly problem solve our failures.
  • We are in Seattle – and our office is on the water! We have mountains, we have lakes, we have four seasons, we bike to work, we have a vibrant theater scene, and we have so much else. We even have kayaks for you to paddle right outside our front door. We welcome interest from applicants from outside of the United States.
  • We are friendly– chances are you will like every one of the 200 (and growing) people who work here. We do.

AI2 is proud to be an Equal Opportunity employer. We do not discriminate based upon race, religion, color, national origin, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions), sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, gender expression, transgender status, sexual stereotypes, age, status as a protected veteran, status as an individual with a disability, or other applicable legally protected characteristics.
