STA is Hiring a Regional Director of Human Resources Near Wall, NJ

Job Summary:

The Regional HRD provides human resources support to regional management and employees regarding HR policies and practices, researches concerns, advises on employee management, and makes recommendations for effective solutions in a mixed union/non-union environment. The HRD will work across various levels of leadership to promote positive employee relations while ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws. This position will report to an Operational Vice President or Director level and provide value-added support to the operations leadership in the region as well as support senior management, as needed. 

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Serve as a link between management and employees by providing timely communications, answering questions, and helping to resolve work-related problems and/or concerns.

• Coach, guide, and support operations managers in the resolution of complex employee relations, organizational policy matters, and performance management concerns; investigate matters, when necessary. 

• Participate in collective bargaining in conjunction with Operations and Legal when requested to do so.

• Provide ongoing assistance interpreting labor contracts and assist in the grievance process at represented locations.

• Collaborate with the Corporate Vice President of Human Resources, Benefits & Recruitment, Sr VP/ Human Resources and Legal Affairs and the Regional HR Directors across the organization to ensure policies and programs are being administered consistently, in accordance with state and federal laws, and best practices are being followed. Oversee labor postings/updates at sites across the region.

• Provide current and prospective employees with information about policies, job duties, working conditions, wages, opportunities for promotion, accommodations and employee benefits.

• Work with the Regional Safety Team to improve workplace safety and worker’s compensation processes and assist in coordination of light duty assignments at terminals to reduce lost time.

• Work with Benefits & Leave Administration team to coordinate benefits and leave related activities in accordance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations.

• Collaborate with operations to support human resource training, recruitment and retention programs.

• Conduct exit and stay interviews; identify trends in turnover.

• Process and manage Unemployment Claims and Verifications for the Region.

• Develop and maintain procedures aimed at improving the quality and delivery of human resources programs/services and best practices for the region.

• Provide routine and non-routine HR policy consultation, guidance and interpretation for employees and managers; be the subject matter expert in the region about employee relations to ensure consistency in processes and practices.

• Consult and review employee disciplinary actions with management.

• Coordinate with Human Resources, Operations and Payroll to update employee records as needed and ensure the timely and accurate processing of employee information.

• Prepare and present reports, as needed, related to HR functions, analyze and summarize data, and identify trends.

• Assist regional leadership with Succession Planning. 

• Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

• Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, including ability to resolve disputes and observe confidentiality.

• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with ability to conduct workplace investigations and communicate effectively across all levels of the organization.

• Highly self-motivated, ability to work independently, resolve issues and provide management with constructive recommendations and conclusions.

• Strong Excel skills with demonstrated experience in the use of filters, pivot tables, and various analytical functions.

• Experience with HRIS software, UKG preferred and ability to learn other software applications related to HR functions.

• Strong analytical, problem solving, and presentation skills. 

• Demonstrated ability to exercise confidentiality, discretion, and tact

• Attend work on a regular and dependable basis

• Ability to successfully pass state and/or federal required Background Checks

• Ability to perform the essential functions of the job

• Ability to comply with all policies and procedures established by company

• Travel to terminals required. Travel % varies based on reporting location

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree majoring in Human Resources, Business, related field preferred 

• At least 5 to 7 years of relevant experience in HR, transportation or logistics field preferred.

• HR Certification(s) and HR transformation experience a plus. 

• Experience with HR in a unionized environment required; transportation or logistics field, preferred. 

• Demonstrated experience working across multiple states and working knowledge of state and federal employment laws and regulations.

• Proven experience exercising sound judgment and making decisions in a fair and consistent manner.
