JOB TITLE: Transportation Driver Specialist
Transportation Department

REPORTS TO: Transportation Driver Supervisor
Transportation Administrator

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Non-Exempt

PAY GRADE: Aux 7

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The Transportation Driver Trainer is responsible for providing behind the wheel and classroom training and instruction for all Spring ISD Drivers and attendants and is subject to all of the same qualifications, essential functions, rules and regulations of a school bus driver.

All employees of SISD are expected to act with integrity, support organizational goals,
communicate in a clear and respectful manner, championing the needs of our students and
drivecontinuous improvement.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • High School graduate or GED from an accredited institution
  • Possess a Valid Texas commercial driver's license (Class B) with passenger (P) and school bus (S) endorsements.
  • Possess the certification for the State School Bus Driver Training Certification Course
  • Possess a Medical Examiner’s Certificate for commercial driver medical certification
  • Proven record as a Spring ISD driver for a minimum of one year
  • Acceptable motor vehicle record

Preferred:

  • Texas Association for Pupil Transportation (TAPT) Supervisor Certification
  • Train the Trainer Certification
  • CPI and CPR certification

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Must follow District and Transportation Department Policies and Procedures
  • Meets all of the state and federal requirements of a school bus driver
  • Excellent organization, oral, and written communication skills
  • Ability to effectively present content to a diverse audience
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Must be able to read and interpret route sheets as well as read and use a map
  • Demonstrates ability to adjust to different assignments daily
  • Demonstrates ability to adjust to different student populations daily
  • Knowledge of the district’s schools, streets, and boundaries
  • Knowledge of child restraint systems, first aid, CPR, special education laws, CDL-specific traffic laws, and school bus equipment/components
  • Excellent attitude and student management skills
  • Ability to motivate, train, and mentor employees
  • Excellent conflict resolution skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of all phases of student transportation
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Provide effective, detailed behind the wheel and classroom training for all driver and attendant candidates
  • Assist the Training Supervisor in implementing the Entry Level Driver Training Program (ELDT)
  • Provide retraining to current employees as assigned.
  • Provide bus attendant, bus driver, special needs, onboarding, student management, communication skills, car seat installation, safety vest installation, CPR, First Aid, and other relevant training to Department’s employees as directed
  • Assist with routes as needed
  • Ensure all employees are ready to serve the students of the district in a safe manner and in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, policies, and procedures
  • Obey all traffic laws
  • Perform field observations and assessments of drivers and attendants
  • Work with Route Manager and school administrators to resolve cases of misbehavior.
  • Perform emergency bus evacuation of students on bus.
  • Present instructional material at meetings to both small and large groups.
  • Willing and able to work weekends, holidays, overtime.
  • Willing and able to work a flexible schedule on occasion
  • Maintain clean bus interior.
  • Administers State Count on the appropriate days.
  • Accurately complete federal, state, local, and district documents and reports
  • Ability to interpret federal, state, local, and district documents and reports
  • Administer basic first aid as trained when necessary.
  • Mentor Drivers may be assigned routes to drive as needed; must be capable of drivingany route in the district.
  • Monitor all aspects of safety in the field and on the lot in the Transportation Department.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Effectively responds to Stakeholder concerns with guidance from administrators.
  • Makes operational decisions utilizing collaboration and industry best practices
  • Maintains a professional working relationship with direct reports
  • Mentor and coach employees to constantly improve job performance
  • Works with school officials to create school bus safety programs and safety incentives for the students.
  • Oversees safe loading and unloading procedures at the schools.
  • Ensures their drivers complete state counts correctly and in a timely manner.
  • Assist the Routing team to collect and track all data for state counts.
  • Assess routes, driving directions, stop locations for hazardous areas, parent concerns etc. and provide recommendations to the Routing Team.
  • Screen and interview applicants.
  • Monitor staff to ensure they are completing pre-trip inspections and following all district procedures and industry best practices
  • Substitutes on routes as needed.
  • Willing to work flexible and prolonged hours, weekends and holidays
  • Report for work consistently and adhere to established routes and schedules as assigned, arrange appointments and personal business so as not to interfere with scheduled duties
  • Actively work to foster an atmosphere of trust within the department
  • Conduct monthly professional development and safety meetings with drivers and attendants
  • Performs other duties as assigned

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following
physical demands: physical mobility, prolonged sitting, repetitive hand and arm motions, some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling. This position will also require traveling within the district. Mental demands: Maintain emotional control, ability to effectively communicate in both oral and written in English for safety reasons. Environmental conditions: work outside and inside; moderate exposure to extreme temperature (hot and cold) and vehicle fumes
