The Program Assistant will work with staff, volunteers, and families to implement the daily operations of the after-school club and summer camp. Under the supervision of the Program Coordinator, the Program Assistant ensures a safe, positive, and nurturing environment where all people feel welcome and meaningfully engaged. This part-time position typically operates from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM on school days and 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM during the summer months.
The role includes coordinating with staff and volunteers to maintain smooth and safe program operations. This involves implementing daily activities, engaging with youth through group discussions, homework help, games, arts and crafts, and other activities, and fostering a welcoming atmosphere for visitors and volunteers. The Program Assistant will assist in transporting youth to and from the center, demonstrating patience and a restorative mindset toward youth and adults.
Other responsibilities include maintaining attendance records, preparing and serving healthy snacks, and ensuring spaces and supplies are accessible, organized, and in good condition. The role also requires clear and proactive communication with all program stakeholders.
In addition, the Program Assistant may operate a 15-passenger van to transport SLYC members between the center, schools, and other locations on designated routes. This includes prioritizing the safety of all passengers while adhering strictly to traffic laws and safety precautions. The Program Assistant must keep the van clean and conduct basic maintenance checks to ensure vehicle safety and readiness.
Qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent and at least two years of experience working with school-aged children. The candidate must be drug-free and able to pass random drug tests, as well as maintain a valid driver's license with a clean driving record. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, punctuality, and reliability are essential for success in this role. The Program Assistant should be open to direction and feedback and demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and adaptability.
