$33.46 - $39.95 per hour, commensurate with experience.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Assists the RSL Director with lab/facility management duties to include management of RSL laboratory spaces, equipment, training and safety protocols, processes, students, reporting, etc.
2. Designs, implements, and maintains software for embedded devices and systems from requirements to integration and test.
3. Performs design, analysis, and verification testing of embedded software for robotic system platforms.
4. Develops pilot/operator/supervisory control systems and software for remote robotic systems that operate on/in land/sea/air/space, and capable of functions such as realtime control, scripting, health/anomaly management, command planning, resource management, etc.
5. Contributes to RSL research activities as appropriate in areas such as multirobot control, cobot development, anomaly management, and advanced robotic system design.
6. Prepares and performs software solution installation and integration.
7. Participates in test and integration of robot subsystems to include software-based hardware test, subsystem integration tests, bench and prototype field tests, etc.
8. Completes documentation and procedures for integration and maintenance of software/firmware.
9. Interface with customers and stakeholders to generate system requirements and verification tests.
10. Participates in generating monthly/annual reports for customers.
11. Briefs lab and university personnel on deliverables, status, and progress.
12. Perform other duties as assigned.
C. PROVIDES WORK DIRECTION
1. May supervise and/or mentor several student assistants.
D. GENERAL GUIDELINES
1. Recommends initiatives and implements changes to improve quality and services
2. Identifies and determines cause of problems; develops and presents recommendations for improvement of established processes and practices
3. Maintains contact with customers and solicits feedback for improved services
4. Maximizes productivity through use of appropriate tools; planned training and performance initiatives
5. Researches and develops resources that create timely and efficient workflow
6. Prepares progress reports; informs supervisor of project status; and deviation from goals. Ensures completeness, accuracy and timeliness of all operational functions
7. Prepares and submits reports as requested and required
8. Develops and implements guidelines to support the functions of the unit
E. QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The items below are representative of the knowledge, skills, abilities, education, and experience required or preferred.
This position requires the ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment.
1. Knowledge
i. Knowledge of undergraduate-level engineering topics relating to embedded systems, software engineering, mechatronic system design, robotic analysis and control, navigation/guidance sensors and algorithms
ii. Knowledge of system design and development processes, testing and evaluation processes, etc.
iii. Knowledge of board-level design, layout, fabrication, testing and debugging techniques utilizing lab equipment (i.e., oscilloscopes, power supplies, etc.)
iv. Knowledge of field operations for safe and successful deployments and tests.
2. Skills
i. Strong experience with embedded software development using C and/or C .
ii. Strong experience with microcontrollers that includes PIC and ARM and the use of low-power and sleep modes.
iii. Experience with communication protocols such as RS232, I2C, CAN, SPI, TCP/IP, etc.
iv. Experience with collaboration tools and software version control, such as SVN.
v. Experience developing advanced embedded/mechatronic systems to include the design/selection/evaluation/integration/analysis of sensing, control and actuation subsystems and components
vi. Experience programming for Linux platforms, real-time Linux is plus.
vii. Broad range of clear and effective communication skills

3. Abilities
i. Ability to learn and apply applicable safety practices regarding lab equipment operations, battery use, etc.
ii. Ability to learn applicable legal and administrative concepts, procedures, documentation requirements.
iii. Ability to learn and execute safe handling of heavy materials and support equipment to include: lifting and transporting equipment (up to 100 lbs or more) on an infrequent basis; potentially operating a vehicle while towing a trailer; operating winches, cranes and overhead hoists; and so on
iv. Ability to learn, conduct and supervise others in the safe use and operation of marine systems in marine test/deployment environments/facilities
v. Ability to obtain and operate within the framework of professional licenses and certifications as deemed necessary, to possibly include radio broadcast licensing, drone piloting and operation, marine vessel licensing and operation, etc.
vi. Ability to work on collaborative, interdisciplinary projects with engineers, designers, and technology managers
4. Education
i. Master's Degree in engineering or a related field required.
ii. Coursework in robotic-oriented topics such as robotics, mechatronics, embedded systems, software engineering, realtime systems, etc.
iii. 1 or more years of experience in working with the design and development of marine systems such as underwater robots, which may be accomplished while a student.
5. Years of Experience
i. 5 years of experience desired in developing/analyzing mechatronic and robotic systems and technologies with an emphasis on software and embedded systems development required.
