Director of Collection Services
Reed College seeks an innovative and resourceful library professional for the role of Director of Collection Services. The next director will play a leading role in shaping and implementing a strategic vision for library collections, including open access and emerging strategies. The collection services department includes acquisitions, cataloging, serials, electronic resources, and systems, functions that are critical to library support of Reed’s academic mission. The director is a member of the library’s leadership team, reporting to the college librarian.

This is a full-time, 12-month exempt position. Reed College offers an exceptional benefits package that includes medical and dental insurance, 403(b) retirement plan with 10% employer contribution, educational assistance for employees and their children, 22 days paid vacation, paid holidays, half-day Fridays in the summer and many other campus amenities, such as membership to the campus fitness center for employee and partner. Starting salary for this position will be $80,000 to $85,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience to internal peer equity.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead development of collection strategies that are responsive to the needs of our academic community.
  • Lead a team of five dedicated staff in the areas of acquisitions, cataloging, electronic resources/serials, and systems.
  • Manage and optimize an annual budget of approximately $2.6M that supports a challenging liberal arts curriculum that includes strong science and social science programs.
  • Work collaboratively to develop and implement policies relating to library collection development, metadata, open access, and open educational resources.
  • Build and manage relationships with library vendors for collections.
  • Coordinate the library’s participation in collaborative collection building and related initiatives with consortial partners and effective use of library systems for collection management.
  • Cultivate working relationships with faculty and librarians to ensure broad participation in acquisition, evaluation, and maintenance of library collections.
  • Support the work of the library’s subject liaisons, with the opportunity to serve as liaison to one or more academic departments.

Qualifications

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in library and information science and minimum of five years of professional library experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Experience working as a supervisor for exempt or non-exempt staff.
  • Expertise in or experience with library acquisitions, cataloging, discovery systems, serials and electronic resource management, open educational resources, and/or scholarly communications.
  • Understanding of current and emerging models of scholarly publishing, including open access, assessing and evaluating collections, and the library’s role in knowledge sharing.
  • Knowledge of electronic resource content models, emerging formats, acquisition methods, and licensing.
  • Commitment to developing and promoting the use of library resources and services.
  • Ability to evaluate and assess the effectiveness of collections, processes, and services.
  • Interest in providing excellent services to undergraduates and faculty in an academic environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with vendors of library materials, information systems, and services.
  • Experience acquiring and providing access to library collections and services in a consortial environment.
  • Knowledge of or experience with licensing of electronic resources.
  • Project management experience.
  • Experience in supporting diverse populations of students and faculty.
