ABLE Early Childhood, an AmeriCorps program, supports school readiness skills in 3- 6-year-old students. Student Success Mentors will serve full-time in pre-K and kindergarten classrooms with Reach Academy Charter School. Mentors serve under the guidance of lead teachers and are coached/mentored through daily hands-on service learning.

REACH Academy Charter School is a free, public charter school located in Buffalo’s Willert Park District and will serve families in all surrounding areas. The school opened in August 2017, with an initial offering of classes in Kindergarten through First Grade. At the end of its first charter, REACH Academy successfully applied for renewal, and as a result, will be serving 900 scholars in grades K-8. True to its mission, REACH Academy will guide these scholars to achievement of high academic standards and to exhibit qualities of service, leadership, character and citizenship. REACH Academy Charter School offers a groundbreaking, hands-on educational program to families seeking creative preparation in all Common Core areas.

Responsibilities and Duties:

• Support academic coaching and social emotional development for students
• Work with identified students 1:1 and in small groups
• Develop literacy and/or math skills varying learning activities by student level, answering student questions, and encouraging assignment completion
• Create and implement a behavior management system for students
• Develop social-emotional skills throughout their day, using proven strategies of learning, practicing, reflection and repetition
• Collaborate with teachers and team members to collect, record, analyze and report on individual student progress
• Support Whole School initiatives to increase engagement with students and families
• Support events or programs that recognize and appreciate student growth and/or achievement in math, literacy, attendance, and behavior
• Serve professionally with the assigned Lead Teacher and support teachers
• Other classroom and school duties as assigned.

• Unwaveringly high expectations for all students, with the belief that every child should have access to a college education
• Commitment to upholding and executing Reach Academy’s, the Service Collaborative and AmeriCorps mission
• Experience working with students in an urban setting, or a passion for pursuing this work
• Demonstrated ability to work well in a team and communicate effectively with diverse audiences including students, staff members, families, and community members

Requirements:

• Preference for individuals who reflect the backgrounds of the students served
• Must be a U.S. Citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien
• Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply
• Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent
