Position Summary

The Communications Specialist I plays a pivotal role in supporting comprehensive communication strategies within the Public Health Institute's Center for Wellness and Nutrition (PHI CWN). This position reports to the Communications Project Manager.

CWN's vision is for a healthy nation where wellness is achievable for all individuals and communities, and its mission is to build capacity and leadership in communities and institutions to make optimal health accessible for all. PHI CWN's work falls within the four primary areas of training, education, research and evaluation, and advocacy; all of which use a health equity framework and culturally tailored approach to variously address the priority areas of increasing access to and consumption of healthier foods, with a focus on fruits and vegetables; decreasing consumption of unhealthy foods and beverages, increasing consumption of water; increasing physical activity, and preventing obesity and chronic diet related illnesses.

This position involves collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to effectively contribute to and execute communication plans, including managing digital platforms, producing content, and facilitating dissemination efforts. Moreover, the Communications Specialist I will be responsible for upholding ADA compliance standards and demonstrating proficiency in essential platforms like Mailchimp and WordPress.

This is a regular full-time position.

STARTING SALARY: Full salary range for this position: $62,968 to $90,167 per year. The typical hiring range for this position is from $62,986 (minimum) to $76,568 (midpoint), based on 100% FTE. The starting salary is determined based on the candidate's knowledge, skills, experience, as well as budget availability.

LOCATION

  • Remote-hybrid, California, United States of America. This is a remote-hybrid position, meaning that while the position is largely remote there will be occasions when the incumbent will be required to work in the Sacramento Office in California and/or participate in meetings, conferences, and such, at external venues including client offices and project sites. Travel will be required approximately 15% of the time.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Collaborate closely with the Communications Project Manager to develop and execute comprehensive communication strategies tailored to PHI CWN's and/or funder/client's objectives.
  • Maintain PHI CWN's digital platforms, including external and internal websites, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and objectives, and conducting ADA compliance remediation as necessary.
  • Coordinate the production of marketing materials, such as brochures, one-pagers, and promotional materials, to support outreach efforts and raise awareness of PHI CWN's and/or funder/client's work, ensuring accessibility for all audiences.
  • Support the monthly production of the PHI CWN Wellness Matters newsletter.
  • Monitor and analyze communication metrics to assess the effectiveness of communication strategies and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Contribute to the creation of compelling content for various communication materials, including newsletters, brochures, and other outreach materials, designed to effectively engage diverse audiences.
  • Maintain PHI CWN's social media presence, curating and sharing timely updates and relevant content to foster engagement and awareness.
  • Act as a vital communications liaison between PHI CWN and external partners, ensuring effective communication and collaboration to achieve shared objectives.
  • Facilitate the development and maintenance of email lists to support dissemination efforts and increase awareness of PHI CWN initiatives.
  • Travel approximately 15% of the time.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 3 years of experience in communications, public relations, marketing, or related fields, with a focus on content creation and digital marketing.
  • Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Public Health, or related field. OR substitute with four additional years of related experience.
Other Required Qualifications
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to ensure all communication materials and CWN deliverables and submittals are ADA compliant, and ability to adhere to accessibility guidelines for digital platforms.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to craft engaging and impactful content for diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency in editorial standards and style guides, such as AP style or Chicago Manual of Style, and the ability to maintain consistency across communication materials.
  • Experience with digital communication tools and platforms, including email marketing and social media (LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram), software (e.g., Mailchimp, Survey Monkey) and content management systems (e.g., WordPress).
  • Ability to work in the Sacramento Office in California and/or participate in meetings, conferences, and such, at external venues including client offices and project sites.
  • Ability to travel approximately 15% of the time.
Preferred Qualifications
  • ADA compliance certification.
  • Some experience with graphic design tools (CANVA; Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, etc.)

This position is classified as exempt based on the job duties. However, based on the FTE, salary level of the employee, or federal/state/local laws, the employee may be classified as nonexempt.
