GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Financial Reporting Manager is a key member of the accounting team. This individual will not only assist with financial reporting matters but can also research technical literature in order to solve accounting issues as well as work independently on various process improvement projects. This person is responsible for complex transactions and processes.

FOCUS

Responsibilities

• Manage the financial reporting process, including SEC filings (MD&A and footnote disclosures) and reporting for franchising and joint venture.
• Review accounting and reporting for equity-related accounts, including those related to equity instruments and share counts.
• Provide support for research and documentation of GAAP accounting issues
• Responsible for coordination of tax procedures with external firms and reviewing documentation provided by support staff.
• Prepare monthly cash flow statement.
• Assist with maintaining overall compliance with internal accounting policies as well as ensuring transactions are accounted for in accordance with GAAP and SEC regulations.
• Coordinate the review and distribution of internal monthly financial packages.
• Review journal entries & account reconciliations related to non-controlling interests, debt, and legal/accounting accruals. Explain variances and trends to the Finance department.
• Prepare and review ad hoc analyses in reporting software as needed.
• Review and implement key controls, as necessary.
• Develop and oversee Staff Accountant.
• Projects & other tasks as necessary.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS

• Must be able to engage in problem-solving skills to help identify and solve potential issues in the field.
• Must be able to communicate through video conference, phone, e-mail, and in-person communications.

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, AND BEHAVIORS

• Must represent The Potbelly Advantage and Our Values.
• Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance.
• Experience in an accounting/finance role, preferably with a “Big 4” or mid-tier accounting firm, working with large and/or public company financial reporting.
• Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is a plus.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and analytical problem-solving abilities are required.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
• Strong knowledge and experience with US GAAP and SEC reporting
• Experience researching and drafting technical documentation a plus
• Ability to balance multiple priorities simultaneously and adapt to the changing needs of the business
• Track record of identifying and executing process improvements
• Demonstrated ability to build and maintain productive working relationships across functions
• Experience with the following systems a plus: Workiva, Costar, Planful, and accounting software
