Position: Server/Sommelier or Bartender/Sommelier

Portale Restaurant is an upscale-casual Italian restaurant in the neighborhood of Chelsea led by Chef Alfred Portale, the James Beard award-winning chef and best-selling cookbook author. We are searching for talented, hardworking, team and hospitality-oriented individuals who can help us create a warm and welcoming environment that serves thoughtful and delicious food and beverage offerings. We want serious people who know how to have fun. 

We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced restaurant professional with serving and/or bartending experience and significant wine interest and knowledge to join us in an entry level sommelier position. This is an opportunity to join a wine team in a hybrid role as server/sommelier. The ideal candidate will be comfortable and content wearing both hats as needed. Operations:

· Complete opening side work checklist for shift, daily; wine storage maintenance and inventory

· Participate in all steps of service as needed during shift

· Assist owners in cultivating the wine program

· Greet customers immediately with a smile and present wine list

· Make recommendations and answer all menu inquiries

· Check identification of all customers who appear under 30 to verify they are of legal drinking age prior to serving them

· Take orders from customers, ensuring 100% accuracy when entering orders into POS

· Follow responsible alcohol service guidelines, as outlined by Employee Handbook

· Process transactions using the POS system; Prepare checks for guests and process payments

· Maintain proper loss prevention standards including cash handling procedures, tip handling, cash deposits; count the cash register at the start and close of each shift

· Maintain organization and aesthetic appeal of wine displays

· Complete closing side work checklist for shift daily, including cleaning the bar and securing all alcoholic product

· Maintain sanitation to Department of Health standards; Keep work area clean and organized

· Inform Manager on Duty immediately of any DOH or OSHA/workplace safety violations

· Monitor inventory; restock bar inventory as needed; inform Management of any product or supply needs

· Deal with guest complaints by finding a way to say yes; Involve the Manager on Duty as needed

· Update knowledge and skills continually by participating in staff training opportunities

· Maintain general knowledge of Restaurant, location, transportation, Management team, etc.

· Complete other duties as assigned by GM

Essential Functions:

· Able to lift 30 pounds

· Fluent in both written and spoken English

· Must have basic math skills

· Maintain friendly, helpful and positive attitude at all times

· Polished personal presentation; Grooming meets Company standards, as outlined by Employee Handbook

· Communicates information effectively and efficiently

· Ability to comprehend and follow written and verbal direction

· Able to work nights, weekends and holidays, and variable schedule, per the needs of the business

· Ability to walk, stand, and/or bend continuously and for extended periods as required to perform essential job functions

· Ability to perform essential job functions under pressure, maintains professionalism when working under stress

· Attends mandatory staff meetings

· Adherence to company, state, and county sanitation standards

· Strict adherence to posted schedule and clock in/out at times

· Unpack, stock, & organize all items in and around the restaurant to maintain highest level of cleanliness possible

· Perform all other related and compatible duties as assigned by the General Manager

· Adhere to all HR policies and procedures

Minimum 2 years of NYC Restaurant Experience in high volume, fine dining restaurants 

• Able to stand for a 10-12 hour shifts
• Available to work late nights, holidays and long days as necessary
• Preferred 3-5 years prior FOH experience in a high volume establishment
