Our services include comprehensive, free civil legal services, financial empowerment, impact litigation, policy advocacy, and community partnerships. NYLAG exists because wealth should not determine who has access to justice. We aim to disrupt systemic racism by serving individuals and families whose legal and financial crises are often rooted in racial inequality. NYLAG goes to where the need is, providing services in more than 150 community sites (e.g. courts, hospitals, libraries) and on our Mobile Legal Help Center. During COVID-19, most of our services were virtual to keep our community safe. NYLAG’s staff of 370 impacted the lives of nearly 129,000 people last year.Job descriptionNYLAG seeks a highly motivated, full‐time bilingual English/Spanish-speaking paralegal to bring our immigration services directly to community members. In partnership with a community-based site in Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, this paralegal will work in the community to identify, screen, and provide consultations and affirmative application assistance to community members. This person will work within the Community Access Programs Unit to expand access to legal services, information and resources to communities throughout the city. Under the supervision of an attorney, the paralegal will contact individuals who are eligible for assistance; field referrals from partners; make appointments; support preparation of affirmative applications for immigration status and relief; track and collect data. Applicants must be prepared to handle a high volume of correspondence and cases, and interact with clients in a trauma-informed and professional manner. This paralegal will be jointly supervised by the Community Access Programs Unit (CAP) and the Immigrant Protection Unit. CAP includes innovative projects that work within under- resourced communities to bring free, civil legal services to individuals in New York City and Long Island. Through the CAP Projects, New Yorkers in need of legal help can overcome obstacles such as geographic isolation, health and mobility issues, and childcare concerns. Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work in partnership with a community-based organization to conduct pre-screening of clients for basic eligibility requirements, track contacts made, and collect documents;
  • Screen clients for eligibility for immigration relief;
  • Assist clients to obtain the documents necessary to apply for relief, fill out appropriate forms, and follow up with clients via phone, mail and email;
  • Interview clients and provide advice and counsel, under the supervision of an attorney;
  • Prepare forms, affidavits, and other supporting documents to be submitted to USCIS, under the supervision of an attorney;
  • Maintain regular contact with community-based partners;
  • Participate in regular on-site screening clinics;
  • Attend in-person community events to expand access to services and respond to community needs;
  • Participate in meetings, trainings, and coalitions related to practice as capacity allows;
  • Manage data entry in internal and external data management systems and assist with generating reports;
  • Assist unit attorneys and case handlers with document translation and verbal interpretation;
  • Provide internal referrals for wraparound services, and external referrals to partner organizations;
  • Other job duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Fluency in Spanish is required;
  • 1-5 years of immigration experience strongly preferred;
  • Ability to work in and value a collaborative team model;
  • Experience working with immigrants, communities of color, individuals who identify as LGBTQIA , youth, and/or survivors of violence;
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and anti-racism, including a commitment to advance the rights of communities who have been historically oppressed and targeted;
  • Excellent organizational, written, oral and analytical skills; and
  • Excellent time and project management skills
