General Statement of Duties

Nash County is on the search for a self motivated professional with a strong customer service focus who wants to be a vital part of our HR team as the Human Resources Technician!

Previous administrative experience is required.
Experience in Human Resources, Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS) and working with the public is a plus.

Employee provides a variety of administrative tasks in support of the Human Resources Department and serves as the initial point of contact for the Human Resources Department.

Employee performs a variety of ongoing work functions that include a diversity of records, reports and filing activities, public contact, office equipment operation, composition, and other general office duties to assist in accomplishing the goals of the Human Resources Department.

Employee may work in a variety of environments, and may work individually or in combination with other Human Resources staff. This employee will work under the general supervision of the Human Resources Director. Work functions are similar to other office support and administrative roles, with a concentration in the areas of Records and Reports, Files, Public Contact, and back-up and assistance to the Onboarding and Development Specialist and Human Resources Specialist.

Essential Duties and Tasks

  • Maintains relationships with County retirees; Oversees and maintains Retiree Medical benefits by working closely with third party funding vendors and Finance; Reconciles retiree benefits monthly and is responsible for all changes in regards; Receipts all retiree medical payments and tracks account balances, overpayments, and overdue balances.
  • Greet incoming customers and employees and providing prompt, courteous assistance;
  • Answer incoming calls—determining the purpose of the calls, responding to inquiries, and forwarding calls to appropriate personnel as appropriate;
  • Provide administrative support to the department with parking placards, E-Verify, FMLA, new hire packets, etc.
  • Assist Human Resources Director with monthly reporting, Red Cross blood drives, United Way campaign, and other events.
  • Assist Onboarding and Development Specialist with explanation/collection of new hire packets, new hire orientation, HR policy questions, receipting retiree medical payments, etc.
  • Assist Human Resources Specialist with keying new hires into HRIS system, benefits change forms, separation letters, exit interviews, etc.
  • Assist and serve as back-up for Onboarding and Development Specialist and Human Resources Specialist.
  • Assist with employee personnel and benefit file maintenance.
  • Prepare correspondence, reports and information of a routine nature.
  • Order and maintain office supplies; issue parking placards to employees; maintain wellness room supplies and report needed equipment repairs; assist with special projects and other duties as assigned. Work may require the use of a variety of manual or automated office systems, which are used to complete assigned tasks.
  • May be required to provide office assistance to Veteran Services Office as needed.

Knowledges, Skills and Abilities

Significant knowledge of office or work unit procedures, methods and practices.

Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Significant knowledge of and ability to use correct grammar, vocabulary, spelling and office terminology to compose and/or proofread correspondence, reports and other materials.

Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.

Ability to maintain strict confidentiality at all times.

Ability to operate general office equipment such as computers, printers, fax machine, etc.

Ability to use automated and manual systems to establish, retrieve, verify, research and/or update information.

Ability to apply a variety of work-related formulas or mathematical calculations.

Ability to record, compile, summarize and perform basic analysis of data.

Ability to independently work with people, using courtesy and tact in performing public contact duties that may be sensitive in nature.

Desirable Education and Experience

Graduation from high school and demonstrated possession of knowledges, skills and abilities gained through at least four years of progressively responsible administrative or clerical experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Preference given to persons with prior human resources experience.
