Mission Neighborhood Centers is Hiring a Director of Development Near San Francisco, CA

Over the course of 125 years, MNC has provided services essential to the improvement of the lives of San Francisco’s communities. We believe that supporting individual members of a family throughout each life phase, brings success and upward mobility for the entire family unit. Today, we have 14 campuses that are enhancing the lives of low-income seniors, youth, and families. We are looking for a Director of Development.

The Director of Development will primarily be responsible for the implementation of all fundraising strategies to grow the base of philanthropic support, expand corporate and individual giving, and increase public awareness of MNC’ programs. Will set the agency’s strategic fundraising agenda to achieve and exceed its fundraising goals through the solicitation of individual, corporate and foundation grants aligning with our plan. The Director of Development will build a pipeline of prospective donors and manage the life-cycle of the donor. -

Development Strategy

  • Develop and implement annual fundraising plans aligned to fundraising priorities and targets anchored to MNC strategic and legacy plan, which includes, but not limited to, strategic initiatives for securing major gifts, ongoing stewardship, special events, online communications and grant management.
  • Utilize the “breakfast, lunch and coffee” approach to build relationships to maximize giving, knowing that the most valuable time spent is either in person or on the phone with these important contacts
  • Oversee MNC’s individual and institutional giving including gifts at all levels, donations toward large-scale projects and multi-year commitments
  • Create and steward a growing portfolio of 75 donors
  • Take responsibility for the cultivation, solicitation, gift closure and stewardship of prospective donors and donors in portfolio
  • Schedule a minimum of four donor meetings/visits per week
  • Strategically include Board members and staff members from other departments in site visits/meetings with donors
  • Work with the CEO to steward major gift donors and prospects
  • Play an instrumental role in donor-related events throughout the year, including planning, securing underwriting, donor cultivation during events and following up
  • Conceive, develop, and write fundraising proposals and in so doing collaborate with other teams within the organization;
  • Develop fundraising strategies that correlate with MNC programs and align with donor philanthropic objectives - frame MNC’s programs as fundraising priorities in a way that will engender support and partnership with community members.

  • Maintain an active list of individual major gift prospects and foundations and create/pursue a plan to cultivate them
  • Consistently utilize donor database to track moves management
  • With the support of the senior team and communications staff, create a plan for and carry out a minimum of four appeals annually, utilizing direct mail, email, social media, on-site signage, etc. to raise critical annual funds
  • Identify potential Board members to put before the Nominating Committee
  • Manage and cultivate a Culture of Philanthropy throughout the organizations, from employees to board members to clients.
  • Regularly attend external events that provide the opportunity to network with current and prospective donors
  • Staff and manage the board philanthropy committee
  • Evaluate internal and external factors affecting fund development to inform recommendations for short and long-term fund development plans and programs that will support the strategic direction and legacy plan of the agency.
  • Plan and manage an annual development event to highlight the success of MNC’s investment and to raise funds for targeted priorities.
  • Research, prepare and submit grant applications as outlined in the fund development plan to generate funds for the organization.
  • Implement the fund development plan in accordance with ethical fundraising principles; monitor local, state and federal trends, and adapt fundraising strategies as necessary.
  • Develop and manage timelines for various fundraising activities to ensure strategic plans and critical fund raising processes are carried out in a timely manner.

External Relations &Communications

  • Provide critical fundraising capacity to help MNC strategically engage funders, improve communications, and increase nongovernment private revenue.
  • Represent the agency positively in public at all times by acting as an ambassador and professional representative of MNC; develop a comprehensive communicate plan to promote MNC to external audiences by maximizing public awareness by demonstrating with a high degree of comfort and poise with funders and prospects.

Measures and Outcomes

  • Manage effective systems for tracking and cultivating donors, and prospects through our donor data management system.
  • Develop performance measures, monitor results, create reports, and assist CPO in evaluating effectiveness of organization’s fund development program.
  • Positively collaborate with Chief Program Officer, and lead an internal team to meet and exceed aggressive fundraising goals. Consistently coach, grow and create stretch assignments to grow future fundraising leaders from within.

Fundraiser Budget

Responsible for developing and monitoring a realistic annual fund budget with realistic revenue projections.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor‘s Degree in Public Relations, Business Management, Marketing, Social Services, or other related field; or AS in a related field with at least 3 years of Project/Program Development, Fund Development; or 6 years of experience in senior mass communications fields (corporate, nonprofit, and/or foundation) including public relations, volunteer management, project management, community organizing or other related areas, with demonstrated stability and sustained commitment in previous position(s).
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in capital campaigns, fund development, fundraising, public relations, organizational development, grant writing, advertising, public speaking, budget development in the nonprofit sector.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, characterized by the ability to listen, to speak, and to write well, with a strong commitment to customer service and the ability to inspire and engage.
  • Must be detail-oriented, highly organized and demonstrate proficiency in creating thoughtful donor correspondence, conducting research and managing database requirements.
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel Spreadsheets and Outlook Calendar.
  • Strong background in working with boards, volunteers and donors.
  • Experience soliciting and closing five- and six-figure major gifts.
  • Planned giving experience preferred.
  • Capital and/or endowment campaign experience preferred
  • Experience developing and monitoring budgets preferred
  • A desire to discover and understand all facets of the organization, its programming and its role in the San Francisco community
  • Experience managing interdepartmental, multi-faceted projects required.
  • A self-directed, entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Team player able to work collaboratively with development colleagues as well as interface effectively with other departments.
  • Experience using CRM database highly desired.
  • Available to occasionally work weekends and evenings, as needed.
  • Certificate in Fundraising and/or advanced degree preferred
  • Knowledge of the San Francisco philanthropic community preferred.

Requirements 

  • Fingerprinting Clearance (DOJ/FBI) and Clearance Child Abuse Index.
  • Current CA Driver License; current auto insurance and a clean driving record.
  • Covid-19 Vaccine Record, Influenza
  • English, Spanish fluency, preferred.
