Title: Student Support Specialist

Founded in 2000, the Milwaukee Academy of Science is a K4-12th grade independent charter school serving nearly one thousand scholars in downtown Milwaukee. The mission of MAS is to graduate students prepared to compete successfully at the post-secondary level. African American students comprise 99% of the student body and over 95% of students qualify for free or reduced meals.
Regardless of student background and external factors, MAS maintains the expectation that students should be on grade level and proficient on state assessments. Teachers are expected to plan and prepare rigorous lessons as well as communicate and collaborate with staff and parents.
I. Accountability Objectives:
A Student Support Specialist assists with carrying out a school wide discipline system and efforts to ensure a positive school culture. The ideal candidate has strong communication skills, is a team player, sincere interest, dependability, and a passion for urban education.
II. Position Characteristics:
Length of Contract: First-Year Specialists- 200 days
III. Position Relationships:
Reports to: Academy Assistant Principal
Coordinates with: Academy Principal & Culture Coordinators, classroom and resource teachers, student support personnel, classified staff, parents and families
IV. Position Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications: Associate Degree or 48 credits from a District Approved College or University preferred.
V. Position Responsibilities:
A. Supervise student discipline, support dysregulated students, and mediate student conflicts as necessary
B. Determine the readiness of and facilitate a student’s return to his/her regular class
C. Complete regular proactive and preventative walk-throughs throughout the entire academy
D. Collaborate with teachers, principals, parents, and students with behavior/emotional health concerns
E. Assist in working with an individual student or group of students in the classroom or in a separate setting removed from the classroom
F. Effectively communicate with families and administration about student behavior interventions
G. Supervise students during arrival, dismissal, recess, lunch and off-campus activities
H. Demonstrate knowledge of and practice intervention strategies in managing the behavior of students in emotionally stressful and crisis situations
I. Implement and manage all support structures for struggling students to ensure academic success.
J. Manage systems and communication around disciplinary consequences, including suspensions, expulsions, and parent contacts.
K. Refer students to health services, counseling, and CPS when necessary.
L. Organize and maintain accurate data to communicate to principals daily.
M. Maintain confidentiality at all times
N. Plan for professional growth through staff development, course work, and/or other opportunities
O. Perform other duties as assigned by the principal and other administrators
