Lawyers For Children, Inc. is Hiring a Director of Finance Near New York, NY

Lawyers For Children (LFC) seeks an experienced nonprofit finance professional to be a hands-on manager in the areas of finance, accounting/payroll, business planning & budgeting. The Director of Finance (DOF) will report directly to the President with a dotted line to the Executive Director. The DOF will partner with the senior leadership to develop and implement long-term strategies for finance, including financial systems oversight, budgeting, financial controls and reporting/compliance.

The DOF will have day-to-day responsibility for financial planning and oversight, government grants administration, organizational finances, and financial reporting/analysis. This position requires proven leadership and experience in accounting, cash flow management, forecasting, modeling sensitivity scenarios, variance analysis, and working knowledge of reporting software, as well as excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Strategic Leadership

  • Finance Leadership: Serve as the senior finance position and oversee all fiscal and fiduciary responsibilities as they relate to finance and financial operations
  • Planning: Collaborate with the President, Executive Director, Board of Directors, and senior staff to develop short- and long-term finance and organizational strategies.
  • Reporting: Ensure monthly financial activities outlined in the monthly operating schedule are performed accurately and timely
  • Budgeting: Lead, design, and manage the annual budget development process. Ensure monthly financial activities outlined in the monthly operating schedule are performed accurately and timely. Collaborate closely with the Director of Development around grant and individual donor projections and financial record keeping
  • Financial Analysis: Provide financial insight and support to colleagues for grants management, fundraising and donor reporting
  • Risk Management: Develop and implement policies and procedures to provide internal controls and protect organizational assets

Financial Management and Reporting

  • Accounting: Lead the collection, recording, processing, and reporting of all financial transactions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and related taxes, general ledger, and fixed assets
  • Financial Statement Preparation: Oversee development of financial statements as well as reporting to convey financial accomplishments
  • Payroll: Manage preparation, submission and funding of bi-monthly payroll; preparation and submission of employee retirement and 403(b) remittances
  • Cash Management: Oversee preparation of cash projections and manage cash flow and forecasting to adequately fund operational needs
  • Audit: Manage the annual financial audit process, including liaising with external auditors and the audit committee of the board of directors
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with all state and federal legal requirements governing non-profit organizations, including tax, legal, and regulatory requirements

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION:

  • Minimum five years’ experience in finance and accounting
  • Minimum two years leading the finance function
  • Bachelor’s degree required; CPA and/or MBA/Master’s Degree strongly preferred
  • Senior-level financial management experience, with proven team leadership abilities. Strong verbal and written communication skills, and ability to prepare and clearly present financial information to both non-financial and financial audiences.
  • Knowledge of appropriate recording of restricted and unrestricted funds in nonprofit financial management
  • Demonstrated understanding of nonprofit organizational structure, accounting and operations, including current working knowledge of General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), 501(c)(3) provisions and recent FASB changes to financial reporting impacting nonprofits
  • Proficient with: Mac OS, Windows, Justworks, QuickBooks Premier Nonprofit Edition

  • Strategic and tenacious in achieving objectives; demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously with excellent follow through and attention to detail
  • Ability to function in a collaborative and collegial environment, sensitivity to others, high degree of integrity, and excellent judgment
