Job Description

Job Overview:

The Youth Program Coordinator is responsible for implementing educational support services for refugee youth and their families and community partners (including New York City public school staff, universities, and local organizations) working with refugee youth. The Youth Program Coordinator has primary responsibility for school enrollment support and the School Success Program, which supports families of newly arrived children and youth to make a positive adjustment to school in NYC. They also play a leading role in the Newcomer Youth Summer Academy, which provides 6 weeks of intensive orientation and preparation for success in NYC public schools. They work closely with colleagues to ensure that the Youth Program goals and objectives are accomplished using a holistic, collaborative approach in partnership with school staff, partner organizations, parents, and newcomer youth themselves. This position reports to the Education & Learning (E&L) Manager.

Major Responsibilities:

·Lead the School Success Program

oRecruit, train, and manage a team of 4-5 Social Work student interns to serve as Student Support Coaches to support caseloads of up to 15 students each

oOversee school enrollment process for all newly arrived youth in coordination with IRC caseworkers, schools, and families.

oOversee School Success Program implementation, including intake, client assessment, individualized service planning, and implementation, group workshops, and monitoring

·Play a lead role in pre-program planning, student recruitment, caregiver engagement, and student support services for Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA)

oOversee student recruitment and enrollment for NYSA, involving outreach & coordination with families and community partner

oSupervise program staff and volunteers (operations & student support staff), as well as supporting day to day program management

oLead the NYSA student support (guidance) team, designing guidance services, overseeing their implementation, and providing counseling as needed; handle disciplinary matters

·Provide technical assistance for Saturday Youth Tutoring and Leaders in Training program, workshop facilitation, & implementation

oDesign & implement opportunities for parent/caregiver engagement throughout the year

oSupport in the planning and implementation of social-emotional learning opportunities for students

·Maintain program information and data collection systems in compliance with IRC standards and contractual obligations, contribute to strengthening program monitoring

oParticipate in Youth Program annual logical framework development and implementation, including design monitoring and evaluation activities related to School Success Program and NYSA

oEnsure program participants are properly enrolled, and files are up to date

oEnsure program data is consistently collected and entered into relevant databases in accordance with internal program framework and contractual obligations

oPrepare annual reports on programs supervised for internal purposes, and prepare contractually required reports for programs supervised

·People Management

oManage a team in accordance with IRC’s People Manager Standards.

oOversee case management and appropriate follow-up, ensuring all services provided to families are appropriately documented in case files.

oOther duties as assigned

Job Requirements:

·Masters of Social Work required

·Seminar in Field Instruction (SIFI) certification preferred

·A minimum of 3-5 years’ experience working with children and youth, specifically in the context of educational and social programs

·Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations required

·Experience working with the New York City Public School system highly desirable

·Demonstrated ability to promote an organizational culture that reflects IRC’s core values of service, accountability, integrity, and equality.Ability to lead in a way that recognizes that IRC’s work is best accomplished through the true collaboration of individuals from many cultures with a great variety of skills and perspectives.

·Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

·Attentive to detail

·Fluent in MS Office applications, especially MS Excel

·Ability to work well with people of diverse cultural backgrounds

·Ability and willingness to work occasional evenings and Saturdays

·Ability to work independently and as part of a team

·Organized, responsible, and flexible: able to maintain responsibility for multiple tasks in the context of a diverse, fast-paced work environment

·Must be fingerprinted and cleared to work by the NYC Department of Education

·Fluency in English required; fluency in a second language highly desired (such as: Arabic, Burmese, French, Dari, Spanish)

Working Environment:

  • Standard office work environment, along with some local travel to community-based partners.
