JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: Estimator/Purchaser

Reports to: Production Manager

Supervisory Responsibilities: No

Summary

Prepare cost estimates for manufacturing of customer orders to aid management in bidding on or determining price of product or service.

Qualification Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • 2-year degree or 5 years of successful cost estimating experience
  • 5 years manufacturing experience
  • Ability to read and interpret documents, such as drawings, renderings, quotes, invoices, and technical instructions
  • Knowledge of sheet metal fabrication and machining technologies, equipment, processes, and metrics
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Proficient with Outlook
  • Proficiency with cost estimating functions of production software
  • Proficiency with Solidworks

  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions
  • Analyze the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one
  • Utilizes a working knowledge of metal fabrication, machining, and the manufacturing process to recommend ways of making projects/products more efficient
  • Knowledge of metal fabrication and machining processes, capabilities, limitations, and costing variables
  • Ability to organize
  • Computer and software proficiency
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Familiarity with ISO9001 policies and procedures

Essential Functions

  • Analyze customer RFQs to determine material, processes, and tooling required
  • Contact appropriate vendors for pricing of raw materials, tooling, and/or outside processing
  • Maintain historical cost data to compare cost trends
  • Input vendor costs into production software
  • Collect competitive pricing and shipping times/rates from multiple vendors
  • Prepare competitive, timely quote packages while still ensuring that jobs will be profitable
  • Create purchase orders for materials, tooling, and/or outside processing needed on accepted jobs
  • Distribute purchase orders to appropriate vendors
  • Create/maintain relationships with vendors
  • Communicate with production team in regards to delivery timelines
  • Resolve price discrepancies and any issues regarding defective material or tooling with vendors
  • Other duties as assigned

Physical Demands

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

Work Environment

Primarily an office position. However, overall environment is a sheet metal fabrication shop. Worker could be subject to high noise levels and exposed to heavy machinery. Worker may be exposed to dust, fumes, and airborne particles. Sheet metal can cause cuts and lacerations. Metal is highly conductive of thermal energy. Burns are possible when metal is exposed to open flames or a heat source. Inhaling sheet metal dust can increase the chances of respiratory illness. Exposure to oil and grease is possible. Machinery such as turrets, lasers, press brakes, shears, saws, and mills can cause bodily harm in the event of improper operation or malfunction.
