About the Role
Infrastructure Engineering Inc. (IEI) is looking for an experienced Resident Engineer to join our New York Team! We are a leading engineering firm known for quality and responsiveness and a proven track record of success as a Prime civil Engineering firm. This is an exciting new opportunity for you to manage the project construction, contractors and field staff as the team works cohesively to replace water distribution mains throughout the Bronx. What You’ll Do
  • Key players in your day are responsibility, leadership, decision making, organization and management. You'll use your expertise, knowledge and good judgment to:
  • Review design and bidding documents; receive and evaluates contractor bids; and supervise construction progress and scheduling.
  • Review submittals or send them to design staff for technical review and then prepare a transmittal letter either accepting or rejecting the contractor’s submittals.
  • Ensure the preparation of accurate and complete work products by monitoring schedules, changing orders and weekly reports; identifying and implementing ideas that save the client time and money or that effectively solve potential problems/opportunities, reviewing interim work products/submittals, providing needed feedback, accuracy, completeness, value, and coordination of sub-consultants.
  • Reviews regularly and is fully knowledgeable of project plans, specifications, and agenda and all ongoing or upcoming field construction activities.
  • Supervises field staff and manages contractors on the site with responsibility for quality construction in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Recommends additional staff, as needed, and develops and maintains relationships with field staff.
  • Prepares or oversees all correspondences to the contractor and the owner, responds to the contractor’s RFI’s, and clarifies the plans or specifications.
  • Makes recommendations for construction change orders, performs constructability reviews and gives input to clients, monitors construction and construction management budgets, and reviews invoices before they are delivered to clients.
  • Reviews and approves quantities and monthly progress pay requests of the contractor, presides over pre-construction and other periodic job site meetings, and prepares minutes of the meetings.
  • Maintains various logs and records related to employees, work assignments, and inspection activities.
  • Develops construction inspection staff through on-the-job mentoring and training.
  • Extensive knowledge of standards, specifications, physical characteristics, and properties of roadway, structures, drainage, and utility systems construction materials and the approved methods and equipment used in making physical tests of construction materials.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices used for construction inspection to test different types of soils, survey methods, concrete and asphalt construction, state and local agencies specifications, laws, rules, ordinances, and regulations related to construction inspection, safe work practices, and procedures.
  • Maintains the level of knowledge required for satisfactory job performance.
  • Skilled in planning and scheduling inspection activities.
  • Work independently and perform duties in the construction field office.
  • Supervise others and effectively make decisions concerning work in progress.
  • Read, analyze, and interpret complex technical documents.
  • Respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.
  • Possess intermediate computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) routine database activity, AutoCAD, and MicroStation, etc.
  • Skilled in detecting discrepancies in plans, materials, and construction methods and processes and implementing appropriate corrective action.
  • Knowledge of NYSDOT material methods and performs oversight of materials testing.
  • Assures general compliance with DOT and DEP and other agency standards and specifications.
  • Communicates with local residents and business owners.
To Be Successful
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.
  • Prior RE or ARE experience required
  • Minimum 5 years of highway and bridge construction experience.
  • Experience with New York City and State Agencies (DDC and DOT).
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record for the past 3 years.
  • Must possess OSHA 10-hour or OSHA 30-hour certification.
  • Erosion and Sediment Control Training Course
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Fundamental knowledge of structural engineering.
  • Proven leadership skills with engineering staff and organizations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong team player in a multi-disciplinary environment who can work on and contribute to several projects simultaneously.
  • New York PE highly preferred

Physical Demands

Working Conditions
  • Usually works in outside weather conditions.
  • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions or in-progress construction hazards: fumes, toxic chemicals, risk of electric shock, and vibration. Often works around dust, asphalt, and concrete.
  • Must be physically capable of walking and moving about on the construction sites, have good hand-eye coordination, and occasionally lift/move up to 50 pounds. 
  • Spends some time working indoors to review blueprints and write reports.
  • Usually works a standard 40-hour workweek either daytime or nighttime.
  • Sometimes needs to put in extra hours, including weekends, to keep up with intense construction work at times and deal with unexpected situations and accidents.
  • IEI will provide a company vehicle for fieldwork with acceptable driver's record.
