Summary of Duties:
Under the supervision of the Property and Material Manager, performs general repairs in the areas of electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and painting at residential and commercial properties managed by the Government of Canada in New York. The incumbent will also oversee and support specialized maintenance on heating, air conditioning, appliances, and other building repairs. The incumbent assists with the preparation and execution of preventative maintenance plans and inspects work performed by contractors. The individual must care for and maintain Mission assets including cargo van, tools, and other materials. Frequent travel with tools and other supplies around Manhattan is required.
Area of Selection:
Open to applicants legally residing in the New York Tri-State area (NY, NJ, and CT) at the time of appointment. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, language* and experience. 
  • Candidates must clearly demonstrate when applying to the position how they meet each of these essential qualifications.
*Language will be assessed further during the process. 
Education:
  • Candidates will be required to provide proof of the completion of their education.
  • Successful completion of secondary school or equivalent (GED). 
Language: 
  • Basic proficiency in English (reading, writing, and speaking).
Experience:
  • Minimum three years’ recent* hands-on progressive experience in repairing, troubleshooting, remodeling and maintenance in one or more of the followings areas: electrical, plumbing, carpentry/painting, and installing equipment/household appliances.
  • Minimum two years recent* experience preparing scopes of work for repairs.
  • Recent* experience in use of hand and power tools involved in carpentry and masonry repairs/construction; 
  • Recent* experience purchasing and maintaining tools, supplies, and material.
*Recent as defined in the last 8 years.
RATED REQUIREMENTS:
The Rated Requirements are part of the essential qualifications and are relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies. Methods of assessment for rated requirements may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview (online pre-recorded/live or in-person), role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment.
Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of methodologies, techniques, and practices related to general mechanical, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC functions and electrical repairs, and preventative maintenance.
  • Knowledge of general hand power tool operation.
  • Knowledge of household appliance installation and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety practices.
Competencies:
  • Adaptable and Flexible.
  • Client focus.
  • Analytical Thinking and Problem Solving.
  • Team Cooperation.
Abilities: 
  • Ability to create scopes of work for repairs and preventative maintenance.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to supervise/inspect work performed by contractors.
Asset Qualifications:
  • Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications.
  • Trade certification from an accredited trade school.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in French orally and in writing.
Operational Requirements:
  • Normal hours of work for this position are in accordance with the Locally Engaged Staff(LES) regulations of 40 hours per week.
  • Location of work: Work is performed on-site at the Chancery, Official Residences and Staff Quarters. There are limited opportunities for remote working.
  • Occasional overtime, including evenings and weekends, may be required with advance notice.
Conditions of Employment: Conditions of employment must be met or complied with before being appointed to a particular position, and are to be maintained throughout the employment while being the incumbent of this position.
Valid work authorization: Ability to obtain and hold a valid work authorization covering the entire employment period.
Security screening: Obtain and maintain a Reliability Status (security level) which includes a criminal and credit background check from the Government of Canada covering the entire employment period.

Other conditions of employment:
  • Lift 50lbs.
  • Valid, clean driver’s license.
