Foster & Adoptive Care Coalition is Hiring a Director of Development Near St. Louis, MO

Summary of Position

The Foster & Adoptive Care Coalition recruits foster and adoptive homes for the St. Louis Metropolitan
area, which includes 7 counties in Missouri and 7 counties in Illinois. This full-time leadership position will
manage all aspects of the development program to support the Coalition's mission. The Director of
Development reports directly to the Executive Director and supervises the Grants & Data Manager,
Director of External Relations, Special Events Director, and Development Associate. The candidate should
possess excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills and work effectively under
pressure. The Director of Development is responsible for ensuring that projects are completed on time,
within budget, and to the satisfaction of all stakeholders. This position requires a candidate who is
energetic, collaborative, and progressive. The candidate should possess the necessary skills and
experience to manage and lead project teams effectively. Additionally, candidates should maintain clear
and open communication with all stakeholders.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • As a member of the Coalition's Leadership Team, the individual who holds this position must
demonstrate the ability to:

o Provide constructive and strategic feedback to the Leadership Team.
o Facilitate decision-making and communications within and between internal and external

constituents and professionals for the development and enhancement of the organization.
o Direct and develop people.

o Evaluate and monitor team and agency-wide progress towards annual goals and
objectives.

o Have vision and see the big picture (especially when things get challenging).

  • Director of Development will oversee a team of 4: Director of Special Events, Grants & Data Manager,

Director of External Relations, and Development Associate.

  • Develop and implement a successful development plan to include individual giving, corporate and
foundation grants, annual appeals, special events, third-party events, Board of Directors and Junior
Board gifts, planned giving, etc.
  • Work closely with the Board of Directors to attend Board meetings and encourage them to solicit
event sponsorships and other gifts.
  • Project Planning: The Development Director is responsible for developing project plans that outline
the scope, objectives, and deliverables of each project. This includes identifying project milestones,
timelines, and budgets, evaluating the success of each project, and identifying areas for improvement.
  • Communication & Marketing: Collaborate with the Marketing team to ensure all agency
communications reflect the Coalition’s mission and vision and go out in a timely manner to
stakeholders and the community.
  • Stewardship & Major Gifts: Develop new relationships and increase levels of involvement and support
among donors and prospects through regular in-person contact, follow-ups by phone, mail, or group
activities (alone or with the Executive Director, Development Team, or Board Members).
  • Grants: Research and prepare proposals to select foundations and corporations in support of the
Coalition’s mission. Collaborate with Grants & Data Manager and Evaluation and Learning department
for grant application and report submission.
  • Events: Support the Director of Events with event budgets and timelines and all other duties as
needed.
  • Navigate and use various software packages to obtain, create, collect, track, and analyze program
data in a timely manner as required by the funder and/or the Foster & Adoptive Care Coalition. This
includes but is not limited to Salesforce.
  • Complete daily activity log.
  • Respect and demonstrate understanding for differences including the ability to interact effectively
with individuals regardless of race, religion, gender, gender identity and expression, national origin,
sexual orientation, age, disability, and socioeconomic status.
  • Receive and respond to training, coaching, supervision, and feedback; works well in a team setting.
  • Respond to communication from families, professionals, donors, and volunteers in a timely manner.
  • Participate in team and agency meetings and/or individual professional consultations. The majority
of these meetings should be in person (virtually during pandemic restrictions).
  • Follow procedures for meeting with, calling, and consulting supervisors.

Department-Specific / Non-Essential Functions

  • Support the Coalition’s mission – attend special events, training events, and other “all hands-on deck”
activities.
  • Participate in general administrative tasks as needed by the agency.
  • Support other agency staff as necessary to meet agency goals.
  • Focus on agency-wide success.
  • Demonstrate flexibility by adjusting to work within new structures, processes, requirements or
cultures; responds quickly and positively to change.
  • Other duties as assigned with or without accommodation.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education

Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree preferred

Experience

Experience in nonprofit development, soliciting and maintaining major gifts, and working with the Board
of Directors. Demonstrated ability to work with top-level community leaders and philanthropists.

Preferred Skills / Qualifications

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build long-term relationships with donors. Embrace the
teams' autonomy and allow collaboration and new opportunities to emerge. Strong organizational skills,
outstanding writing skills, and attention to detail. Detailed knowledge of Microsoft Office programs;
familiarity with Salesforce is a plus.

Additional Skills/Competencies necessary to carry out services to the service population’s culture
and socio-economic characteristics.

  • Obtain a cultural awareness that results in a clear understanding of the worldview that directs
individual interactions with people of other backgrounds.
  • Ability to identify needs unique to various diverse populations including those of different gender
identities, sexual orientation, ethnic groups, race, and physical or mental capacity, and address
those needs with community resource referrals.
  • Understanding diversity (ethnic, religious, socio-economic, etc.) as well as sensitivity to the
situations of the children and families the organization serves.
  • Assist other professionals and team members in understanding diverse populations' unique
needs/characteristics.
  • Follows rules of confidentiality for the children and families the organization serves.
  • Pass required background checks (references, Family Care Safety Registry, Form 1-9, etc.).
  • Free of criminal history.
  • Fulfills the responsibility of a mandated reporter in the State of Missouri.
  • Behaves with integrity, demonstrates high ethical standards, and displays a positive image of the
Foster and Adoptive Care Coalition.
  • Demonstrates accountability for results and keeps commitments to others.

Organizational Relationships/Scope

This position reports to the Executive Director and Management Team. Collaborative consultation will be
sought from all teams.

Working Conditions

Candidates are required to show proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing

  • The Coalition office is considered home-base with primary office hours Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m.
– 4:30 p.m.
  • This position requires flexibility. Evening and weekend hours may be required to meet the

expectations of this position.
