Reports To: Communications and Development Director
Location: San Francisco
Compensation: $70,000 - $75,000 per year, depending on experience, plus excellent benefits
Schedule: Full-time exempt position (40 hours per week, hybrid work)

The Communications Manager is part of a small department and will both execute and manage various communication-related responsibilities, serving as an ambassador for Family Connections Centers and the community. In alignment with the department’s goals and strategies, the position develops the materials and events that increase the visibility, participation, and funding of our programs. They will work to highlight FCC’s impact and expand our network of donors, volunteers, and community partners. Using program data, creative storytelling, design, various communications platforms, and strategic thinking, the Communications Manager will engage our diverse audience, amplify FCC’s mission, and connect with our community of families, staff, funders, media, and collaborators in the education and family support fields.
This role requires excellent writing and editing skills, experience with design software and a range of digital communications/media, strong project management to meet deadlines, and a warm and personable demeanor. Community Engagement, Communications, and Outreach – 70%
- Acquire and maintain a detailed knowledge of Family Connections’ programs and goals to successfully implement communications and marketing strategies that support and promote this work
- Draft, edit, and distribute FCC’s e-newsletters, press releases, marketing materials, and internal communications
- Lead FCC’s Volunteer Program and volunteer events, creating new opportunities in partnership with FCC staff, managing information distribution, and ensuring positive and engaging volunteer experiences
- Work with program staff to collect information and publish flyers, marketing materials, and outreach collateral with clear and accurate information; distribute materials to program participants, funders, volunteers, staff, and stakeholders, including translations in Chinese, Spanish, and Vietnamese as needed
- Coordinate and staff occasional outreach, fundraising, and community events, with ability to communicate organizational goals to the public; cultivate relationships with families, volunteers, and local partners
- Maintain FCC website, program calendar, social media platforms, and digital communications; develop campaigns and strategies to engage our audience and grow our reach and followers on all platforms
- Using JotForm, Eventbrite, Google Forms, etc., build event registrations, volunteer sign-ups, program forms, surveys to collect community feedback, etc.
- Design, order, and manage printed materials and branded swag items; equip/train staff on best use of materials; keep outreach items stocked and organized
- Visit programs to collect photos, videos, stories, and testimonials from programs and participants; maintain photo folders, and keep website/digital platforms updated with new materials
- Develop and utilize strategies to reach new community members, cultivate donors, recruit staff and volunteers, promote programs and enrollment, and communicate FCC opportunities
- Adhere to the FCC Style Guide and support staff communications, ensuring that all materials have high-quality, error-free copy and design
- Draft, edit, and support the preparation of persuasive and well-written donor solicitations
- Draft and support the submission of grant proposals and reports, following the grant templates and grants calendar for deadlines
- Input donor data into Salesforce database in a timely fashion
- Support the planning, marketing, and outreach of FCC’s fundraising and large-scale community events, working closely with volunteers, Board members, and partners
- Bachelor’s degree or substantial experience in place of degree
- 3 years’ experience in digital and written communications, nonprofit fundraising, or marketing strategies
- Excellent writing and composition skills, excellent grammar and editing abilities, strong attention to detail, and ability to convey complex messages and impact through strong, persuasive communications
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Design Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, and/or Illustrator)
- Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work collaboratively with others in a team environment and with partners, participants, and funders
- Critical and strategic thinking, flexibility, resourcefulness, and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with a high level of detail, while staying on track for individual project requirements and deadlines
- Experience working in nonprofits and with Constant Contact, social media, and WordPress preferred
This job operates in a hybrid work environment with mandatory on-site hours at FCC’s centers in Portola and Excelsior. Some remote work is possible. Work scheduled weekdays, Monday-Friday, with occasional evening/weekend work to support community events. This role routinely uses standard computers and phones to perform work duties.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This job requires extended periods of time at a computer. The employee must lift and/or move items over 25 pounds on occasion. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
