Technical Production Manager for the Black Box Theatre


SALARY:

DESCRIPTION
:

The Technical Production Manager (TPM) is crucial in creating a positive image and supporting the mission and vision of both the Black Box Theatre and Edmonds College. The college is committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success. The Black Box Theatre is a 175-seat performance venue, producing a multitude of varied public events every year. The TPM supervises, plans, and coordinates staffing, design, and technical aspects of projects under the artistic leadership of the Black Box Theatre Director. The position provides event planning support and event supervision to clients, maintaining superior customer service and professional quality production values.

The TPM will work closely with event programmers from the campus community to help develop, manage, and execute all types (lectures, dance, film, music, theatrical) of events and performances. The individual must work well with guest artists, staff, students, alumni, and faculty. The position will supervise 2-4 technicians, students and volunteers on a per need basis. The individual will work to ensure the quality of the Black Box’s technical systems by addressing lighting, sound, and other technical issues. The position requires flexible evening and weekend hours related to Black Box events and the College’s quarterly academic schedules; hours per week are flexible and variable, minimum of 40 hours per week over the course of an academic quarter. This is a full-time, administrative exempt position, reporting to the Director of the Black Box Theatre.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Envision, collaborate, and advise on events produced in the Black Box Theatre with the Director and campus facilitators.
  • Create, implement and oversee a production schedule ensuring that all deadlines are met by guiding event coordinators and clients through the production process (design planning, construction, rehearsal prep, stage management, load-in, tech, run of show, and strike.)
  • Provide event stage management for the Black Box by determining the necessary technical support such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs.
  • Operate, maintain, and safeguard the technical assets of the theater, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, and communications equipment.
  • Monitor the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and rigging equipment; arrange for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; perform preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Design, set up, and maintain lighting and sound systems house plots for theater, dance, music, and other productions and projects; assist guest designers and artists with technical-related issues.
  • Other duties as assigned for events and maintenance of the facility.
  • Oversee the selection, assignment, training, and coordination of technical associates, interns, and student volunteers for individual events.

This is an exempt position that reports to the Director of the Black Box Theater.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of five (5) years experience in technical theater or educational, community, or corporate event management
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals and groups representing diverse backgrounds, identities, life experience, abilities and perspectives
  • Demonstrated ability and experience related to equity, inclusion, and multicultural proficiency that supports the College’s commitment to advancing the creation of a diverse, equitable and an inclusive campus climate.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in technical theater or events management
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals and groups representing diverse backgrounds, identities, life experience, abilities and perspectives
  • Demonstrated ability and experience related to equity, inclusion, and multicultural proficiency that supports the College’s commitment to advancing the creation of a diverse, equitable and an inclusive campus climate.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:


Knowledge of:

  • Theatrical production and design principles including lighting, scenery, audio, and projection.
  • Event and production management including dance, theater, concert, classical recital, corporate, and fundraising.
  • Event production staffing and scheduling.
  • OSHA standards and regulations relating to maintaining safety standards, Safety Data Sheets, First Aid kits, and other safety equipment.
  • Theatrical systems and equipment such as Allen & Heath, Yamaha, Mackie, Behringer, ETC EOS Consoles, Qlab, SFX, computer display outputs for projection, multiple-display video cards, Vectorworks, and AutoCAD.
  • Mac, PC, TLR, 25Live, Canvas, Google Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, and campus software.
  • First Aid, CPR, and emergency planning.

Skill in:

  • Theatrical set: designing, carpentry, construction, and safety.
  • Theatrical lighting: designing, installing, running, calculating load for, and maintaining a lighting plot.
  • Theatrical audio: designing, programming, running, mixing live audio, providing live sound reinforcement for music groups and soloists.
  • Theatrical projection: designing, programming, and running.
  • Working with and instructing hourly stage technicians and students.

Ability to:

  • Communicate effectively with a diverse clientele including safety needs and procedures.
  • Navigate within complex organizational systems to complete projects.
  • Operate and maintain theatrical lighting, audio, and projection systems.
  • Utilize theatrical resources to support the many and complex needs of the Black Box Theatre community.
  • Serve as event operator, lead technician, or house manager as needed during performances.

    PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    The work involves activities which occur both inside and outside the theater. Noise, vibrations, some physical hazards such as proximity to mechanical parts and electric current, atmospheric conditions such as low light, fumes, odors, dust, oils, and fluids are all part of the working environment. Some heavy lifting, moving of objects, standing for extended periods of time, climbing stairs/ladders, use of power equipment, and working at heights may be required.


    COMPENSATION:

    Salary is $63,883 - $68,150 and is based on the Edmonds CC administrative/exempt salary schedule, plus a full state benefits package, which includes tuition waivers for college classes, medical, dental, retirement options and more. Vacation and leave package includes 12 sick days per year, 11 scheduled holidays, 1 personal holiday, and 24 vacation leave days per year.


    WORK SCHEDULE:

    Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., including some evenings and weekends.


    FLSA Status:

    The position is an exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act requirements.
