CSTA is Hiring a Remote Data Analyst

Who We Are: The Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA)

Hello, World! CSTA is a non-profit membership organization that supports and promotes the teaching of computer science, providing opportunities for K–12 teachers and their students to better understand computer science and to more successfully prepare themselves to teach and learn. We are fully remote with engaged teammates spread from California to Massachusetts and we blend our collective experience gained from our past roles in non-profits, K-12 schools, higher education, and hospitality to create high-quality teaching and learning experiences for teachers worldwide.

Who We Are Looking For: A Collaborative, Critical Thinker with a Deep Passion for Data

CSTA is looking for our first Data Analyst to build and connect systems and structures for, collect, and analyze data across the organization to support leadership and team members in making sound decisions. As our ideal candidate for this role, you are a technically sound analyst with a strong head for data and statistics, a deep interest in problem-solving, and exceptional attention to detail. You are methodical, accurate in your work, detailed in your documentation, and an excellent researcher. You are highly collaborative, with the ability to understand needs from key stakeholders and turn them into actionable reports and recommendations. You are excited about leveraging these skills to support K-12 computer science educators and equity in education!

How You’ll Contribute: Essential Duties and Responsibilities

As Data Analyst at CSTA, you will lead our organization in turning data into information, information into insights, and insights into smart business decisions. You will take many disconnected systems, and cohesively connect them together to deliver reports that provide insight on things like member behavior, to help shape strategic direction. We have exciting changes planned, like migrating to a new Association Management System (AMS); you will play a critical role in the success of these projects.

In your day-to-day, you will:

  • Own Data Management and Reporting. You will build and maintain systems in collaboration with the membership team; build and maintain best processes and reporting; report on current and future grants; support annual goals tracking, reporting, and visualization for the leadership team and board of directors; cohesively build and connect our data systems and processes across the organization.
  • Support our members and community through maintaining monthly membership metrics and member database; analyzing quarterly membership demographic data, partner data, virtual community and affinity group engagement reporting, and creating visualizations to share with the team; collaborating with our membership engagement manager to identify trends that inform programming; and driving chapter reporting and dashboards.
  • Support Events and Professional Learning through ownership of post-event survey reporting processes for CSTA key events, and reporting CSTA’s key event metrics to ensure we maintain a high level of attendee satisfaction and experience.
  • Ensure success of the Professional Development Passport project; create and maintain system for members and nonmembers to self report on PD, working with the National Science Foundation (NSF) and other key grant stakeholders; providing reporting to PD providers and grant stakeholders.
  • Perform research, and other duties as assigned.

What You Bring to the Table: Experience & Qualifications

As our ideal candidate, you are passionate about addressing issues of equity in CS education. You have strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate information with attention to detail and accuracy. You are equally as excited by fixing old systems as you are building new processes from scratch. You have a strength in listening to understand stakeholder needs, and presenting information to solve problems.

To be successful in this role, you also bring some combination of the following:

  • 5 years experience as a data analyst
  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent work experience) in mathematics, computer science, economics, or statistics
  • Proven data and analytics skills, including mining, evaluation, dashboard creation and visualization
  • Experience with database and model design and segmentation techniques
  • Technical writing experience in relevant areas, including queries, reports, and presentations
  • Strong SQL or Excel skills, with aptitude for learning other analytics tools
  • Are self directed, ask great questions, and are driven to problem solve
  • Ideally have familiarity with Fonteva or other salesforce AMS systems
  • Thrive in a remote-first, collaborative, team-oriented environment

In addition, all candidates:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Must pass a pre-employment background check
  • Must be able to travel up to 15% time within the U.S. and occasionally work outside normal business hours. Travel costs are covered by CSTA.

What We Offer

As a nonprofit, we strive to be market competitive with similarly sized organizations, and internally fair in our pay practices. The hiring salary range for this role is $87,000 - $94,000 annually. This represents the target offer range given the scope and experience expectations for this role.

In hiring, we are generally open to candidates in a varying range of experiences and levels, and recognize that as a candidate you may be less experienced or more senior than this job description as posted. If that's the case, an updated salary range will be shared with you if you move forward in our hiring process.

CSTA is proud to provide a flexible, engaging working environment with a great team. Other perks and benefits include:

  • Flexible schedules with independent workday Fridays
  • Paid time off: three weeks vacation annually, ten days sick leave, ten holidays, one-week office closure for summer break, and one-week office closure at the end of December
  • Medical, dental and vision premiums paid at 100% for FT positions and subsidized dependent premiums
  • Paid parental leave (8-12 weeks)
  • Technology and work from home subsidy consistent with our bring-your-own-device environment
  • Option to participate in retirement savings plan with generous employer match after six months of employment

CSTA Leads Through Our Values

CSTA is committed to disrupting systemic inequities and developing inclusive teaching and learning practices. This extends to our internal team and we regularly seek opportunities to expand our knowledge and better our practices to foster internal equity and a sense of belonging within our team. Read about our values here

CSTA is honored to be an equal opportunity workplace. We realize that by bringing together a team rich in diverse backgrounds, thoughts and experiences, our people, organization, and our members flourish. What to Expect From Us

During the interview stage, you can expect:

  • Step 1: An initial “phone” screen (30 minutes). If there’s a good mutual fit for the role, you’ll be invited to next steps in our process.
  • Step 2: Following this initial interview, we’ll ask you to complete a brief technical exercise consistent with the typical work of this role. You can expect to spend about 90 minutes on this exercise.
  • Step 3: Following successful completion of the technical exercise, we’ll schedule a virtual interview loop with the 3-4 team members you will work most closely with (3 hours total).

All interviews will be remote via Zoom; we are happy to make accommodations you might need to feel set up for success in our process.
