Senior Legal Assistant
Under general supervision, leads, trains, and performs the more complex and difficult administrative, secretarial, and office support duties of considerable complexity requiring thorough knowledge of a legal department, its procedures, and operational details; provides administrative support to management and departmental staff; composes and prepares correspondence using considerable judgment in content and style; performs skilled word processing, data entry, and typing; provides information to the public and staff requiring knowledge of department services, policies, and procedures; provides assistance for a wide variety of confidential assignments; provides lead direction and training to other legal assistants as assigned; and to perform related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Legal Assistant I/II
Receives general supervision from assigned managerial or supervisory staff. Exercises no supervision of staff. May provide training to less experienced staff.
Senior Legal Assistant
Receives general supervision from assigned managerial or supervisory staff. Exercises technical and functional direction over and provides training to lower-level legal support staff.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Legal Assistant I: This is the entry level in this series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of support duties related to the preparation, processing and handling of legal cases and related records.
Legal Assistant II: This is the journey-level in the series Incumbent will perform the full range of assigned duties to support attorneys and the successful handling of legal cases. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to the assigned area(s) of responsibility, working with a high degree of independent judgment, tact, and initiative. This class is distinguished from other administrative support classes, which may also provide office support in a legal setting, by the criticality and difficulty of the work performed and its impact on the successful handling of cases.
Senior Legal Assistant: This is the advanced-journey level classification in the series and performs the more complex and difficult duties to support attorneys and the successful handling of legal cases, as well as general office administration duties. Incumbents will act as subject matter experts and may provide direction to one or more legal support staff members. This class is distinguished from other clerical classes, which may also provide office support in a legal setting, by the criticality and difficulty of the work performed and its impact on the successful handling of cases. It is distinguished from the Legal Assistant classification by lead administrative responsibilities and the complexity of assigned administrative tasks.
The positions in the Legal Assistant class series are flexibly staffed and positions at the II level are normally filled by advancement from the I level requiring two (2) additional years of experience and after gaining the knowledge, skill, and experience which meet the qualifications for and after demonstrating the ability to perform the work of the higher-level class. Positions at the Senior level are normally filled by advancement from the II level requiring two (2) additional years of experience and after gaining knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform as a subject matter expert.
