CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Information Technology Technician I: This is the entry-level classification in the IT Technician series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents are responsible for the configuration, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair and upgrading of telecommunications systems and personal computer hardware, software, peripherals and network connectivity in assigned County departments. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise.
Information Technology Technician II: This is the journey-level classification in this series, capable of the full range of independent duties that relate to computers and telecommunications systems including providing advanced personal computer system set-up, maintenance and troubleshooting, as well as, telecommunications system installation, operations, trouble shooting and user support. Positions at this level are distinguished from the I level by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, working independently and exercising judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This class is distinguished from the Senior IT Technician in that the latter performs the most difficult and responsible types of duties assigned to classes within this series, including providing advanced technical support to system users and technical direction to lower-level staff.
Senior Information Technology Technician: This is the advanced journey-level classification in the IT technician series. Incumbents work at a high level of independence while exercising significant responsibility for computer and telecommunications user support services. Additionally, incumbents are expected to accomplish difficult and/or complex technical computer and telecommunications set-up, troubleshooting, repair and maintenance tasks, provide work direction to lower-level IT Technicians, perform increased administration and paperwork tasks, conduct analyses of trends, demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of IT and county standards and processes and are responsible for the scheduling and coordination of staff time. This class is distinguished from the Information Technology Supervisor or Network Services Administrator in that the latter is the full supervisory-level classes responsible for organizing, assigning, supervising, and reviewing the work of assigned IT staff.
These positions in the IT Technician class series are flexibly staffed and positions are normally filled by advancement from the lower level.
