San Luis Obispo County is seeking a dynamic, dedicated, and experienced leader to serve as the Deputy Director, Registrar of Voters! 
This critical role is at the heart of our democratic process, ensuring that local elections are conducted with integrity, transparency, and fairness. As Deputy Director, you will play a pivotal role in overseeing the administration of elections countywide, managing voter services, and leading a team committed to upholding the highest standards of electoral process and voter participation.
Typical Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the planning and execution of elections, including voter registration, ballot distribution, polling place coordination, and vote counting.
  • Supervise and provide guidance to department staff, ensuring they are well-trained and equipped to perform their duties effectively.
  • Manage voter registration processes, including updates to voter rolls and compliance with state and federal election laws. Support the Registrar of Voters in budget preparation and management.
  • Assist with public outreach efforts, including the development of educational materials and participation in community events. 
  • Identify areas for process improvement and implement changes as necessary to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of voter registration and election operations. 
  • Stay updated on best practices and emerging trends in election administration.
  • Stay informed about local, state, and federal regulations and policies impacting elections to ensure compliance and up-to-date information dissemination.

The ideal candidate will bring a blend of technical expertise, leadership skills, and a deep commitment to engaging every voter. You will work closely with the Registrar of Voters to implement strategic initiatives, enhance voter education and engagement, guide a dedicated team, and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local election laws. This work will require strategic thinking, creativity, sharp communication skills, and diplomacy.
Minimum Qualifications:
A combination of education, training, and experience resulting in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of qualifying education and experience includes:
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in business administration, public administration, accounting, or a closely related field
  • AND shall have four years of increasingly responsible experience administering a voter registration and elections program with two of the years including supervisory experience.
Applications, including answers to supplemental questions, must be submitted online by May 19, 2024.
An initial application review will be conducted, then candidates who meet the minimum qualifications and are best qualified will be invited to participate in selection activities which may include written exams and interviews. 
Final candidates will be required to have an in-depth background review performed before proceeding in the process. Please note that references will not be contacted until the end of the process.
