County of San Luis Obispo is Hiring a Deputy Director Information Technology Near San Luis Obispo, CA

The County of San Luis Obispo Information Technology Department is seeking an experienced leader to join their team as a Deputy Director to lead the Infrastructure team. As a direct report to the Department Head, the Deputy Director would be responsible for the complete operations of the Infrastructure Division. The division oversees 30 staff members and is responsible for large applications essential to County business. 

The Information Technology Department has positioned itself as a trusted business partner to all departments through the ongoing development, support, and management of technology across the County as well as the successful completion of multiple multi-year projects.
 
The Department’s roles and responsibilities as well as the number of projects continue to grow year after year. This growth has led to increasing complexity in managing our personnel, finances, and offices, and created a pressing need to find the right business leaders to join our organization. This business leader will require the necessary technical and organizational skills and, as importantly, the ability to lead and think strategically, creatively, and independently, be an agent of change, communicate well, clearly and often, “own” their specific business units, mentor their teams by focusing on the what and why, maximize results, be inclusive, consultative, a resource to others while being able to multi-task and handle and discern between conflicting priorities.

Proven experience planning, directing, and coordinating infrastructure technology activities and corresponding multi-million, multi-year investment countywide. Responsibilities include:

  • Creation, design, management, monitoring and support of all IT infrastructure and services.
  • Proven experience leading a large multi-disciplinary team of compute, storage, backup, network, and radio communications experts and vendors to support and continuously improve the County’s robust and resilient network, compute, and radio communications environments to ensure reliable services to 3,000 employees by effectively monitoring and managing the performance of over 900 servers, 180 network locations, 4,000 VoIP phones, 100 miles of fiber, 20 radio communication sites, 2,000 daily radio subscribers, and over 10,000 total devices active on the network day in and day out.
  • A personable, knowledgeable, critical thinker who can effectively build and maintain strong relationships with 26 County departments and executives, local law enforcement agencies, the State of California, Tier 1 vendors, and negotiate and manage multi-million-dollar, multi-year contracts while searching for opportunities to leverage our investments.
  • Capable of building a three-to-five-year broadband, cloud, and hosted infrastructure strategic and operational roadmaps, corresponding ongoing operational cost and return on investment.
  • A dedicated, caring, good listener leader, who is committed to implementing creative ways to train, retrain, and retain talent and maximize the use of internal and external resources. 
Education and Experience

A combination of education, training, and experience resulting in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of qualifying education and experience includes:

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, business administration or other closely related field, AND
  • Eight years of progressively responsible experience in information systems management which includes experience in a variety of IT disciplines and/or accountability for strategic and fiscal planning.
