Job Title: SeniorDirector of Finance

Department: Finance

Reports To: Deputy Director for Finance andAdministration

Salary:  $90,000-$110,000

FLSA Status: Exempt, Full-Time

Work schedule: Monday – Friday, Nights and Weekends as needed.

Job Summary:

As the Senior Director of Finance, you will oversee the museum's accounting and finance operations daily. This pivotal role encompasses a spectrum of duties, including budgeting, financial planning, accounting, grant management, compliance, and reporting activities. Your primary responsibilities entail guaranteeing precise accounting practices in accordance with GAAP standards, establishing and maintaining a comprehensive internal control framework, and providing timely and accurate financial analysis and reporting. Integral to this position is the preservation of institutional financial standards through collaborative efforts with all tiers of staff.

Financial and Strategic Planning:

  • Manage cash flow, optimize the use of investable funds, and oversee the organization's endowment funds to support sustainable financial growth.
  • Monitor departmental key performance indicators (KPIs) and provide strategic guidance to improve financial performance and operational efficiency.
  • Prepare and deliver timely and accurate financial reports in compliance with GAAP, providing valuable insights to management, the board of trustees, and grant-making organizations.
  • Conduct ad-hoc financial analysis and provide operational insights to support organizational goals and objectives.
  • Collaborate with the Deputy Director for Finance and Administration to prepare financial information for board meetings, senior leadership discussions, and committee presentations.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process in coordination with cross-departmental teams, monitoring variances and providing meaningful analysis to inform decision-making.

Accounting and Compliance:

  • Develop, refine, and enforce accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), fostering a culture of financial integrity and accountability.
  • Coordinate and facilitate the annual audit process, ensuring seamless collaboration with external auditors and internal stakeholders.
  • Oversee the preparation and submission of annual tax returns, including IRS form 990 and 990-T, and other regulatory filings.

Leadership:

  • Lead and manage the day-to-day operations of the Finance department, providing mentorship, supervision, training, and development to ensure departmental objectives are met.
  • Administer and optimize financial databases and accounting systems to enhance efficiency and accuracy in financial reporting.
  • Collaborate cross-departmental to recommend best practices and software solutions.
  • Fulfill other duties and responsibilities as needed to support the museum's overall mission.

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of BA or BS in accounting, finance, or business administration; CPA and/or MBA preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of progressive experience in accounting or finance leadership roles, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
  • Hands-on leadership style with a collaborative and participative approach to management.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic and inclusive work environment, demonstrating adaptability and flexibility.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office suite; experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT is advantageous.
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting principles and regulations.
  • Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and strategic thinking skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities, with a keen attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey complex financial concepts to diverse stakeholders.
  • High ethical standards and commitment to confidentiality and integrity.
  • Demonstrated commitment to dependability, responsibility, and professional growth.
  • Demonstrated respect for cultural differences and commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion (DEAI) practices.

Uniform Requirements: 

Business casual attire.

Physical Demands:

This role requires standing, walking, sitting, and manual dexterity. Ability to reach, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch. Effective verbal and auditory communication. Reasonable accommodation is available.
